Machray Chemist shop window glass restoration.

Post by BruceHarrison »

I noticed that this was subject to a long and heated debate last year....

I thought that you all might like to know that I volunteered to resore the old Machray Chemist shop glass window sign last autumn when I discovered it in pretty bad shape in the basement of the Kente coffee shop.

I have been doing so over the winter months and the two pieces ("Machray" and "Chemist") are virtually ready to be re-installed at Kente Cafe at 16 Sydenham Road, not in the new windows as they are of different dimensions (and might look confusing) but in a downstairs room that the coffee shop owners will be converting into a meeting space. They should be in place by the end of April - go take a look.

It is a shame that the whole shop front wasn't retained or available to restore, or the interior of the old chemist shop wasn't kept in place, but at least a small part of Sydenham's heritage is back.

That's great news, and I'll look forward to seeing it in its new home. Thanks for taking an interest in it.

These are the pics BEFORE I started restoration. They were is a very sad state. Gaps bewteen the lead and glass. Broken panes of glass and v v dirty. If you liked them before you'll LOVE them after restoration. :)

They are back! :D

Not quite where they started life in 1926 but at least they are back on display in the basement room at Kente coffee shop at 16 Sydenham Road together with a display of the restoration process, photos and text. 8)

Please have a look and let me know what you think. :?:
