Had a filling done (private, not NHS) but have had a headache since it was done. Went back, had another X-ray and told it was maybe infected. After losing faith, went to see my previous private dentist in North London and told that the filing was done incorrectly, there was still decay left behind, an absess had formed and now I have to have root canal treatment!!
Going to N London to see a dentist is a hassle but if the end result works its the better course of action.

Some years back I had a procelain crown (as with you, all private) done by one of their dentists. If you look closely you can still see the black remnants of the base of the old tooth. It was a legacy of a Scottish diet when growing up but despite getting regular checks at ADP and clean bills of health one day the tooth literally broke in half (it's right at the very back so I didn't see it go black).
I'm guessing you go to North London as it's where you used to live. I know there are many great dentists nearby. But I guess you wanted to go somewhere you knew?
We both now go here, it's expensive but worth it. We started going here as my Partner's Mother swears by them.

Try the dental practice on Dartmouth Rd in Forest Hill - they're taking on NHS patients and I've had good experiences with them. Open on Saturdays too which is convenient.
I believe they specialise in sedation and treating nervous patients, which seems like a good sign to me, but they're quite happy to take on people who don't have a phobia of dentists!

This is very worrying ! I too was not that impressed at my last check up.
If you have had unacceptable treatment then this needs to be raised with the Lewisham Primary Care Trust who will have a contract with them for NHS dental treatment. If it was your GP giving bad treatment/advice we would not hesitate to complain.

Interesting to read someone's good experience of the Dartmouth Road dental practice. My experience there was not good at all. I needed my two year old's teeth looking at. She was at that stage, so painfully shy, and I explained this to them as best I could. The guy who saw us made it quite clear he was exasperated with her crying within about two minutes of us being there. He had a cursory glance in her mouth and told me her teeth were riddled with decay and that I should not feed her chocolate or juice. At that stage, I can swear the girl had never had a sliver of chocolate, sweets etc and very rarely had juice. He repeated the advice as if I hadn't even spoken. All in all, we were not in there five minutes. I took her to my dentist in Covent Garden a few weeks later and they were much more patient, got a good look in her mouth and assured me there was absolutely no decay at all. I was absolutely appalled at his impatience and patronising attitude. He had me feeling like I was a terrible parent for no reason at all.
