I'm going to give half a cheer for the arrival of Subway.

On the plus side, they'll keep the building smart, their signage will be bland (but inoffensive) and they'll increase footfall far more than any "art instillation" (never gonna happen) will.

On the negative side, let's face it, their stuff is a bit bland.

I wonder who their market will be? Commuters on their way into town? Local traders? Local residents?

I know that the UK is becoming more and more like the US - but for us in Sydenham to be getting a subway before the underground!! - takes the biscuit !!!

Let's be positive - Subway is a recognised brand and I'll associate it with cleanliness, decent baguettes and I really don't think 'decent' brand names will do the high street any harm at all. There facias tend to be better if nothing else. It could have been a lot worse.

We could do with a decent Thai restaurant and how about a Gourmet Burger restaurant?

I actually don't mind the odd East/West or Turkish food store - great for unusual ingredients and excellent Mediterranean fare (olives/oils/breads). We also need a delicatessen. And a 'nice' butchers.

But a relatively 'one up from a KFC/McDonalds/Chicken Kitchen' type outlet has to be a GOOD THING!

Im not a great fan of Subway but a lot of people like it. I think its better than nothing to have a Subway and may help close down some of or at least one of those rotten Chicken shacks. We want some progress to be made and thats one of the better things, i hope. I dont think we should complain, were not living in Richmond now are we? :)

Phew!

Good job you reminded me there parker. How embarassing would that have been had I put the key in the door of some random Victorian terrace tonight? Hopefully they'd have seen the funny side, eh? I mean, after all, they also have a Subway themselves...it's on the Kew Road should you wish to know.

All ribbing aside I agree with the sentiment. A low-end chain just about bests the low-end independents that are currently inflicting their coarse offerings upon us. In time hopefully this might tempt more high-end independents and high-end chains...

We've heard more than the odd rumour about an M&S Simply Food!?

The sooner the better I say.

It can't be that bad an endeavour surely? If we take off whatever cliched views or rise tinted ideologies that are invariably attached to the larger chains, or in this instance, franchise, what do we we the Sydenham gentryfolk stand to lose?

I'm all up for it and (to echo Ulysses) if it ends up being a catalyst for local shopkeeps to better thier offerings, well, who am I to complain?

Erm, that rumour may have been started by me....

I wistfully hoped M&S would buy The Greyhound, and restore it in a similar way that Tesco did with the Jack Stamp pub in West Norwood.

I did write to M&S about it, mind, promoting the area as an investment opportunity.

Good on you dickp. I'm not saying it definitely didn't come from you but it wasn't a rumour I picked up or was fed from this forum and I've heard it from some fairly reliable and informed sources...

*taps the nose twice and winks*

Anything that saves me the 40 minute walk each way to Waitrose will get my vote. Although it keeps me honest for the walk back as I have to carry what I buy.

I got a strange tingle in my trouser department when I read about that M&S rumour - that's how bad things have got down the Sydenham Road.

OK, inappropriate hyperbole to one side, an M&S in our High Street would be a real signifier of better things ahead.

Here's hoping that one will come true ...

Lets get real..Subway V the other fast food offerings in Sydenham..its a step in the right direction. Lets hope its little and often and that these businesses find thier market ,establish themselfs and pave the way for others to follow in the future.

Blimey; double-entendres, hints at things, etceteras jostling for inappropriate attention, M&S [or should that be S&M?] trouser department tingles, [suits you, sir!!]?

Subways, fast food possibilities or promises of things yet to come.
How real is it? We can only hold our breath [Here he goes again...],
and as Asquith quoth, 'wait and see'...

How noble a way may be paved by the establishment of a possibly more upper crust [smirk] rapid eatery establishment ...

Seriously... A slightly more 'posh' quick-grub joint is something we don't need.
...Do we?
[Gawd luv-a-duck...try dusting-off the old wok and doing some of your own 'fast food'...You know it makes sense. Home cooking? A bit beyond some ...so it seems.]

I'm really pleased about Subway opening a branch on Sydenham Road. It's so depressing passing empty shops and compared to the current takeaway options it's definitely a step in the right direction.
M&S ...that would be absolutely fantastic. I am not that keen on Lidl and Somerfield!

Oh Dear...as ever the user 'parker' really doesn't seem the brightest chapess/chap...does she/he? [You and I have both pointed out the usual idiocy in her/his comment].

In between getting general demography woefully wrong she/he seems to latch onto supposed 'better' areas without really having the first inkling toward the reality (Richmond shall join the supposed Elysian Fields of Beckenham...amongst others that she/he has gotten wrong).

I daren't make she/he aware of New Beckenham nor Beckenham North nor Southend Lane et al, lest she/he realise LB Bromley and Beckenham is actually quite rough.

I was going to post how well the public school Sydenham High [for Girls] on Westwood Hill had done in that it was better than mostly every independent/state school in London in the recent league tables but I feared 'parker' might top her or himself. God forbid Sydders would have something to be proud of, eh parker?

I daren't tell she/he that LB Kingston-Upon-Thames is really the bees-knees in fear of she/he latching onto that one...such a bloody sheep she/he is...
