Plaque dedicated to Dietrich Bonhoeffer unveiled

Post by Thomas »

Bonhoeffer was a pastor at two German Churches, in Sydenham and Aldgate in the 1930s before returning to Germany, where he was executed in 1945 in the final days of the Nazi regime.

A plaque was unveiled at the site of the Aldgate church recently:

Thanks for the posting Thomas. No doubt in my mind as for the new name for the Naborhood Centre.

I certainly don't want to appear as paranoid but I am slightly dissapointed that no mention is given of his time in Sydenham. I appreciate this article is concerned with Aldgate but it's either another example of lazy journalism and not researching the subject matter fully or another example of Sydenham being slowly air-brushed from history.

He also lived at 2 Manor Mount (behind the Sainsburys in Forest Hill) for some time when much of the building was a German girls school - there's a blue plaque there.

Here is the rebuilt Dietrich Bonhoeffer Kirche in Dacres Road - the original German Church having being destroyed by the Germans:

Sydenham is, with half of europe, mentioned in his Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonhoeffer

That's terrible Admin. Very good play on words though. Are you reading The Scum to keep the chat lively with the regulars at the bar over in the Town Pub?

I refer to The Sun in such as way as I am a Liverpool fan who attends a good few games. It's in no way a slight on those who read it.
