A Rant About Roadworks

Post by SydenhamHillAndy »

Coming home again today I notice that there are no active roadworks on Sydenham Hill and yet they have left the traffic lights to control traffic. This is the second time in two weeks they have gone and left the traffic lights for the weekend although no road is dug up.

The roadworks are crazy around here at the moment and yet we see this sort of behaviour which just makes living in london so demoralising. Surely something can be done... In fact I may just go and move the lights and cones onto the pavements.....

Rant over. Back to QI on BBC2......

I noticed this morning that Kirkdale is virtually free from roadworks, that is until you get to the roundabout and catch the back up from the high street. The same cannot be said of Wells Park Road, there are lots of little holes from the Spar shop down as far as Kirkdale. There are temporary traffic lights by Halifax Street. These small holes have been dug up and filled so many times and yet the water still runs down the road quite freely.Stones or tarmac from the road is being thrown up over the pavement along with water which makes it quite unsafe to walk on the pavement on Halifax Street side of the road. But you very rarely see anybody working there, only thing working is the generator for the lights.Whats going on ?

It's pi$$ed me off too. OK utility companies, so you've got to dig the roads up, there's no getting away from that. BUT... rather than shutting off half the bloody road and causing chaos while you're not doing anything (i.e., between the hours of 5pm and 8 am and all day Saturday and Sunday), what's stopping you from putting metal plates down to cover the holes and letting traffic flow?

It's about time we imposed proper fines on Utility comapnies for this sort of crap like they do in the US. It's cheaper to pay the low fines here than employ workers on overtime. Give them some incentive to get the work done quickly.

It's appalling they can cause such disruption for months on end with impunity. I use the trains but feel for the poor s*ds stuck in traffic for hours.

Grrrrr. Wish I'd taken a different route. It took me 45 minutes this evening to get through from East Dulwich to Sydenham (via Syd Hill). Combination of heavy traffic due to the Jerk Cookout Festival in Hornimann Gardens, and cars parked on both sides of the roads with not enough room for a bus and people carrier to pass past each other, and a queue from kirkdale onto sydenham road because of the stupid roadworks and the stupid roundabout. Grrrrr. Does my head in. When are the roadworks planned to finish?

Grrrr! Tell me about it!

I've had what seems the entire pavement dug up outside my flat and replaced with plastic covers and fencing, all the neighbours' wheelie-bins are in my forecourt as there's no space on the road, tarmac is flying up and hitting against my window, traffic is almost mounting the pavement to squeeze past shaking my foundations, I keep losing my sky signal due to the dish being shaken out of alignment and to top it off now, the other day I stepped into the shower only for a great load of air in the pipes to short my electric shower out.

Thing is, I can't even start fixing these things as I have no idea how much longer this will go on for and whether any continued works will just knacker my sky/shower again!

Seriously not impressed at the moment with the quality of living around here and have been in a bad mood for days because of it all... :x

what annoys me is that they only seem to work a very limited number of hours a day.....

Its still perfectly light enough to work but there is currently noone working on them.

Surely the companies should be compelled to work on them during all the hours of daylight and six or seven days a week in order to get the works over with as quickly as possible in order to minimise disruption.....
