Reason why...

Post by BeckenhamTown.us »

I used to live in Kent House Road and buy fish from the fishmongers on the parade of shops in Sydenham. They closed down due to competition from the Sainsbury Savacentre etc.

I enjoyed the excellent fish from Horton's in Beckenham yesterday. Good to see such a great range - far better than the supermarkets. I'll be buying all my fish from there and supporting them in future.

Nice to see a new shop which isn't a coffee/bookies/empty etc.

The fish van outside the Albert pub still does some trade from its regulars and I think Bromley still has a fishmonger, but they are getting rarer and rarer these days.

We also get a couple of guys from Hull come down the street once a month taking orders for fresh fish. Not used them, but nice to see.

Cheers

JC

It would be great to have a fish monger and also a farmers market in Sydenham, ideal spot for a market would be next to the old HSBC.

Does anyone know how the Penge market was established?

Who are the local ward councillors in Sydenham, perhaps they would be a good source as to how oen coudl be started up by the old HSBC bank.

I also remember the fishmongers on Sydenham High Street. I only bought fish from there a couple of times and it was really good. Trying to eat much more fish these days so would probably use one far more often now.

While I think having the Savacentre Sainsbury's has been a good thing in general it is a shame that such good places suffered. Not sure what the solution is as much as I would like to I don't have the time or the money to shop in gorgeous delis and boutiques all of the time! Even if they would make the high street look amazing!

Does anyone remember the butcher at the top of Kirkdale? I forget what it was called but they used to do really good organic/free range meat. I moved to the area in 1992 so we're going back a few years. I think it was a combination of the Savacentre and the beef on the bone pallaver that caused them to shut.

It was called Miles and Co and yes, it was very good.

There were other circumstances which caused the closure, but Savcentre would have been a contributing factor.
