Sydenham Assembly Coordinating Group meeting on Monday?

Post by simon »

Anyone go who can tell me what happened please?
Specifically regarding this business left over from the last Assembly:

As three projects tied for 2nd place, the decision on funding options was left for further consideration by the Coordinating Group. Cllr Best outlined the different options to be considered by the coordinating group:
1. Top up the £2,700 shortfall via the Locality Fund
2. Divide the shortfall cost equally between the three projects
3. Divide the shortfall cost pro rata (according to the value of the project) between the three projects.

Many thanks

I can't say exactly what happened beause I was only there part of the time, but I think the position is that the extra money will be found from somewhere for the top four projects - so yes, £10K as seed for the mosaic project.

I was there, in fact, with an idea for getting local public domain information together in a generally useful form, for which as yet I have not identified actual costs - indeed it might not need any Lewisham funding. However, with everything else there wasn't time to discuss it before I had to leave for another meeting. A fair bit of the discussion while I was there was about firming up rules for who should be able to vote at Assembly meetings. There is a real problem - for me in particular - in that other ward Assemblies, e.g. Perry Vale, take a simple, logical approach of saying you can vote if you live or work in the ward. Due to boundary changes a while back, if the same principle applied to the Sydenham ward, that would exclude me, since actually live in Perry Vale, even though I very much feel as if I live in Sydenham. For this reason, among others, I don't feel I can be considered any more a member of the Sydenham Assembly co-ordinating group, although I'm happy to offer my thoughts if asked!

I get so frustrated at process over common sense. All this boundary nonesense...grrrrrrr and now the head of the Sydenham Society can't even vote on things in Sydenham. I mean, come on, what the hell are some of these councellors playing at? Daft daft daft.

Anyway, I'm deeply saddened to hear that this daft proposal for a mosaic is even being considered.

What can we do to stop it?

How can we make sure the money is spent on things that are more important?

How can we make sure the nabourhood building gets done up first?

Lets face it, the nabourhood building ALREADY has one decorative element on it. Does it need two?

Are we really throwing 10 grand of public money into some art that we don't even know what it looks like????? If the people behind this ar really serious about it, the LEAST they could do would be to use a local forum like this to stick a visual of how it could look. I did it in the whatif posts and it doesn't take long. They are more than welcome to use the images from the nabourhood centre what if post:

Personally I would be very very upset if it went ahead. If the nabourhood centre is a turd, I'd rather polish the turd first before sticking some art on it!

I'm in a similar position. I live in the SE26 bit of Forest Hill ward, and identify with Sydenham at least as much as with Forest Hill. My address is within the parish boundary of the Church of the Resurrection, a church of which I am an active member and which is certainly in Sydenham ward. When I asked an official at the last Sydenham ward meeting whether I could legitimately vote on that basis, she said yes, but I somehow felt she was doing so out of politeness rather than on the basis of firm knowledge of the constitutional position. I would be disappointed if any firming up of the rules meant I would have to give up any claim to 'dual nationality.'

I am a member of the coordinating committee. I'm on this committee since I believe that meetings such as local Assemblies can play a great part in improving our local area and encouraging debate about local affairs.

Assemblies also play a role in financing local events. For example, without funds from the Sydenham Assembly (and also the FH and Perry Vale Assemblies) the recent SAF would never have happened. Or if it had, the Festival would have been greatly restricted in the events it offered.

There is simple no truth whatsoever that participation in the Assembly - or on the coordinating committee - is restricted only to those who live within the ward boundaries. Meetings are open to anyone who "lives, works or is being educated in Sydenham”. At the recent committee meeting we clarified this by saying we would replace the word "Sydenham" with "SE26" so that no-one would be excluded who lived locally and felt that they had a contribution to make to the Sydenham Assembly.

It would be inconceivable, for example, to have Assembly meetings without John Fried, our local optician or Geraldine at the Kirkdale Bookshop - both active in local affairs but both living outside Lewisham Borough.

We want to encourage participation from as many interested people as possible. Please come to the next meeting of the Assembly.
