The First Sydenham Arts Festival will be here in just a month on July 3rd and today they opened their Box Office. Around 50 events, many free, some with famous names to entertain and delight you over 10 Glorious Summer Days & Nights (keep praying!). The Sydenham Arts Festival programme features over 50 events including drama, dance, music and poetry performances, visual art, film, celebrity book-signings, workshops and family friendly activities.
The Festival programme is currently at the printers. The website is up and running and the Box Office is open - it's all starting to happen!
In keeping with the Festival's aim to allow maximum access to all, tickets are reasonably priced and many events are free. So come along and sample what's on offer - maybe try something new - and discover the arts on your doorstep!
Better still there is still plenty of time to get involved. The organisers need help in many areas - volunteers with all levels of experience are very welcome. Already some 60 volunteers have signed up to assist.
A Volunteers Meeting is being held at the Here for Good Centre, 17 Sydenham Road, on Thursday 4 June at 7.30 pm. Please come along and see if there is anything you can do to help.

A broadsheet giving the details of the Visual Arts Trail over both weekends of the Festival is now available at the Kirkdale Bookshop, and will be in the Libraries and local pubs and cafes by tomorrow.
Ticket sales are going well - book early to avoid disappointment as some venues are quite small and have limited seating, for example the rear room of the Golden Lion will only seat 60 people.
Some events that are free also need tickets as some venues are small - for example Kirkdale Bookshop.

SAF09's first sell out event is Amaretti Angels at Trattoria Raffaele on Thursday 9th July. Tuesday is almost gone. So book Wednesday quick if you want to be sure of having a dramatic dinner!

Must disagree with comments about the costs of the Sydenham International Music Festival concerts - top orchestral musicians, playing fantastic classical music, in a local venue with fine accoustics, to sell out audiences speaks for itself.

All published performances of Amaretti Angels have now sold out. By popular demand one further performance has been arranged for lunchtime on Sunday 12 July. Contact the Box Office 8123 1631 or call into Kirkdale Bookshop to buy tickets.
Other Festival performances are selling well and we cannot guarantee extra performances if these sell out - so book early to save disappointment.
Steve Grindlay's talk on Artists and Musicians in Sydenham will take place on Monday 6 July at 7.30 at the Bookshop. This event is free but you will need to book your seat with the Box Office to avoid disappointment

Sydenham Arts Festival starts tonight with Blues Night I at the Golden Lion featuring Steve Matthews' Razers at 8 pm and Dave Briggs Band at 9.30 pm. Admission free but voluntary contributions are welcomed
Following last week's highly successful performance at the Hob, Ocelot Gymkhana comes to Sydenham and starts at 8.30 pm at Champion Hall (opp. Home Park). Tickets cost £8/£6 (conc) are available on line at www.sydenhamartsfestival.com , via the Box Office on 8123 1631 or at the door.
Tomorrow's Street Celebrations begin at 10 am in Sydenham Road and promises five hours of free family fun.
Look out for the Butterfly Garden, the Beach at the Bookshop with Punch and Judy, and Levi Roots (of Reggae Reggae Sauce and Dragon's Den fame) will be at the Bookshop between 12 and 1 pm. From 11 - 2 there will be local music and dance groups performing outside the Dolphin and there will be buskers and street performers entertaining elsewhere in the high street.
Over the weekend as part of the Festival there will be a photographic exhibition "The Bigger Picture" at Forest Hill Library, Open Studios at Havelock Walk, Normanton St Methodist Church, The Kirkdale Centre and an exhibition of Arts and Crafts in the new conservatory of local charity Sydenham Garden, Queenswood Road

Events on Saturday
Saturday's street events were superb! A BIG THANK YOU to all the organisers for a lovely day and to all the helpers and performers! The live bands at the Dolphin were amazing! Didn't catch the names of the bands which is a shame. Even the traffic works didn't do anything to dampen the mood as we had the glorious sunshine and cool glass of wine on our side (The puppeteer towards the end made me laugh for the wrong reasons).
We then strolled down to the Launderette for the drama performances not quite knowing what to expect and were delighted by the solo acts. Oddly enough the Launderette made the ultimate stage! What a wonderful unique idea.
Little children clearly loved playing in Sydenham's very own urban beach outside the Bookshop! A lovely idea which probably gave fmailies a little welcome respite from their shopping trip.
The Forest Fest at Forest Hill school was very busy with plenty to see and do. We were even ushered to a woman at a stall handing out free lettuces!
Overall a lovely second day to the Festival. Thank you again to all those involved in organising the events and looking forward to the rest of the week

.I agree Poppy, although glad to say that they didn't manage to succeed in respect of the 3 or 4 acts that I watched!poppy wrote:It was a shame that the Linen shop decided to set up a table selling tea towels outside, with two girls trying very hard to drown out the live music from across the road with their own stereo though!
I must say that the Punch and Judy show at the bookshop was fantastic and went down well with both the kids and their parents. I have seen this guy perform before and he really is a master of his craft. The only downside was that the beach (and pavement) was packed and it was a shame that it could not have been located in a slightly larger area (the disused Greyhound carpark across the road would have been ideal!!).
I thought the day was a huge success, and well done both to the performers and those that worked hard to make it all happen. I hope the remainder of the festival is as successful and that it is repeated for many years to come. It shows what a great community spirit we have, and what a pleasant town Sydenham is to live in!
What a great job Sydenham Radio are doing in covering the Festival. I had my doubts about whether I would tune in - but I've found myself listening to every clip.

What a piece of misjustice at Sydenham's Got Talent last night! The blonde should surely have won! I don't mean Carl the compere but the small blonde chanteuse. She didn't even get on the shortlist!
Let's hope it keeps dry for tomorrow night's film in Home Park.

I fail to see how there was any 'injusice' at Sydenham's Got Talent. There was no 'unfairness' or 'favouritism' in any part of the voting. The judges voted the 2 acts they felt were the ones to go through and the audience voted for their choice of the 2 finalists.
Yes I agree, the young lady was really good, as were the other acts, and disagreed with the comments she received about her hair, choice of accent etc...even though she was in 'character'. And not to mention the comments that, the female act's should have been wearing 'heels' (forgetting that they are NOT professionals yet...and further more only aged from 14).
However, the voting was fair and the group of 8 young winning dancers were chosen by audience preference and not by the amount of family support they had in the audience...There was only 6 of us. I never 'imagined' they would have won...up against the other acts and their support. They done 'really' well. As did ALL the acts. WELL DONE TO THEM ALL!!![/i]
