Tesco are opening up all over the place, it wont be much longer until you can only buy from the large supermarket chains.
once they get rid of the competition they will close the local stores and everyone will have to travel to the large supermarkets.

All,
Had a look in Tesco last night. It was very busy at the time, and I am impressed with the variety of their goods. I can look out my living room window into the shop and there was still activitiy late at night - so if local businesses are to survive they will need to up their game!
I'm sure this is all a good sign for Kirkdale and I am so keen to know/find out what local business will open soon in the area - Woodman and Windmill - anyone know what's happening there?
We should start a campaign to improve that part of Kirkdale further! Any volunteers?! I know some years back someone asked about a Cafe Nero opening in the area - I have noticed that Tesco Expresses and Cafe Nero's often sit side-by-side in other parts of the city....
I also emailed (don't ask me why) the owner of the Dartmouth and Dolphin who said who wouldn't consider opening in the area because a. it's too close to his other pubs and b. because of parking problems.

At the risk of going off-topic; if the Forest Hill swimming pool is built on Willow Way within the next couple of years (WW is the junction the new Tesco is situated) that would certainly help revive Kirkdale.
I believe Lewisham have now distributed leaflets regarding the options and you can also have your say online via the Lewisham council site.

Thanks - agree the swimming pool would help, but then again it would be a shame to lose the old location. I guess there are pros and cons, but great for the area that it looks like the funds are available for a pool.
I've written to Nero about plans for expansion (someone on the forum did exactly the same two years ago!). I'd urge you all to do the same!

The area is going through a lot of redevelopment at the moment - with the east London rail line extension set to launch in June 2010.
In particular Kirkdale in Sydenham, which is the original high street of the town, is going through some changes. Just this week a Tesco Express opened on Kirkdale (near to where it meets with Dartmouth Road en route to Forest Hill), and that part of the road has two new blocks of flats, local businesses and available units that are crying out to be used. There is a tremendous sense from the local community in the area that a Caffe Nero type business would be a very welcome addition to the area, and I suspect that the empty units will soon be snapped up by businesses looking to expand.
I have noticed that throughout the city of London, and elsewhere throughout the country, Caffe Neros sit within close proximity to Tesco Expresses and I wanted to know if this was intentional, and if there was an opportunity here?
To my mind this part of Sydenham is ideally situated for the expansion of Caffee Nero's in London. Given the successes you have had in Crystal Palace and in Dulwich it seems like an ideal location.

I wrote to Caffe Nero and recieved an instant reply saying that they looked at 2 properties in Sydenham about a year ago bt they were honest and thought Sydenham wasnt the right location for their business, perhaps because it looks a bit scruffy, however they said they were interested in the fact that the tube is coming to Sydenham and the Council investing in the high street and while at the moment they werent able to look into any new locations due to the economic climate they said they will have another look into it within the next 6-12 months when theyre in a position to look at expanding into new locations.
I believe they would rather open in Sydenham Road rather than Kirkdale due to the footfall on the high street from the station and the other shops in the high street complementing such a business.

Popped in on Wednesday for a few bits and pieces - it's definitely going to be handy to have there.
For me, it'll probably replace some of the 'top-up' shopping I currently do near work rather than at home, or some smaller shops at the Bell Green Sainsburys.
I don't use any of the shops on Kirkdale apart from the chippy and the (excellent) drycleaners, so it'll only be increasing my footfall up there. If other stores opened up which complement what Tesco is offering, I would definitely use them too - any specialist food shops, for instance. However, given that the High St, with it's much greater footfall, isn't awash with such stores, I'm not holding my breath.
