I did not say Vener Road was like Beirut but just not one of the roads that come to mind in connection with the word posh.

I have to say, the new street drinking contingent which appeared today on the wasteground adjacent to Lloyds bank aren't exactly helping matters. I'm fairly sure it's illegal to drink alcohol on the street, so I don't understand why they haven't been moved on.

I don't think it is illegal - when this was discussed earlier (at great length) no-one could point to an offence being committed simply by drinking in the street. Are they the same people that used to sit outside the Naborhood Centre?

Although may not be technically illegal if it happens in bank hours would imagine Lloyds would put pressure on the police to move them on

I think most of Venner Road has lovely houses and is definetely one of the most expensive and desirable areas of Sydenham, also the houses in the Venner Road to Newlands Park area are usually always in high demand, estate agents are usually always putting signs in their windows saying that they would find it easy to sell your house if you live on those roads. I think most of the houses past the Bromley Council sign on Venner Road are the nicest and most looked after, they also have expensive cars parked outside. I would define it as posh, if compared to some other roads in Sydenham.

Parker
I am not anti Venner Road as I said lived there for 25 years.
You now say roads round Venner ( I assume you mean Homecroft , Wiverton and Byne ) plus the Bromley two thirds of the road which is Penge.
I would not argue with that but just queried the Sydenham end of Venner which is what you originally stated.
Most of the right ( going down from Lloyds is early 70's council houses ), followed by some excellent Victorian houses which are nearly all housing association and divided into 3 units.
The left side a long Victorian terrace which used to be nice now sadly neglected and multiple occupancy, then Waverley Ct old peoples home , the The Firs ( very neglected council block of early 70's then lastly the old terrace again multiple occupany in dire need of renovation.
I rest my case.

If i refer to Venner Road as being 'posh' or 'desireable' when i say this i generally mean the Bromley end if ive confused anyone, i.e. Wiverton, Byne Road area, the Bromley end is under Sydenham too, i dont think the 'Lewisham' end is very nice, as you say. However i think the majority of the houses on Venner Road are nice.

Annie, i dont necessarilly generalise the idea of an estate agents attraction to a good area as being attracted to it because its 'posh', im just saying that i believe Venner Road has some posh houses and indeed likely to home 'affluent' people as they are fairly large houses on a nice road, in a commuters paradise having good connections to two local train stations, if an estate agent is advertising that they can sell a house in your road then it must be somewhat desireable.

When i say 'posh', i mean Venner Road is relatively posh compared to others in Sydenham, though understandably the extent of 'posh' would vary in other areas, i.e, whats regarded as 'posh' in Sydenham would be different to what would be regarded as posh in somewhere like Chislehurst or Beckenham Park Langley etc.

OK Parker
I accept we are getting confused also a matter of opinion. You are talking about Byne , Wiverton and Penge end of Venner , all of which are in Penge not Sydenham.
Also think many posher roads such as Hall Drive than Sydenham Venner Road.

While STF is busy debating the posh and not so posh roads in Sydenham and LB Lewisham is busy approving yet MORE Betting shops up and down Sydenham High street, Bromley council has been busy making vast improvements to our nearby neighbour Penge. Maple Road market will be re-opening in full swing on June 6th with stall holders from Dulwich and Kennington EXTREMELY interested to open their stalls there. There will be an array of crafts and good quality food stalls opening. Also I've noticed recently Penge has seen the arrival of some very smart cafes with outdoor terrasse areas such Cafe Casbah and the Blue Bell in Maple road. The HardEdge is also smart with outdoor "terrasse cafe" area and trees planted to form a pleasant partition between the punters and the traffic on Penge high street - offering a more enjoyable "people watching" expereince.

It's a shame LB Lewisham's vision for an improved Sydenham high street seems to be taking forever. It appears Bromley got their act together ages ago and have been actively permitting positive businesses to open up shop while all we get is yet another gambling shop and nail bar. :(

There's a lot going for Syd high street - as previous posts have discussed - here goes my little list:- e.g. The Dolphin, Blue mountain cafe, DIY store, Kirkdale Bookshop, Candessa, Milano, Sugerhill, Trattoria, Garam masala, Paulros, The wonderful CAKE STORE, Angie's lovely flower stall, Superdrugs, Boots (yes I do lurve my big pharmacies)! And all our lovely grocers , butchers, shoe heelers, MFC, and newly refurbed Somerfield. So it worries me to spoil the high street (oops I mean Sydenham Road) with another betting shop.

Are there any artisans out there wanting to set up shop in one of these unused shops as a temp measure before another business moves in? is this something the council could explore? I'm sure that artisans would love the opportunity to show their wares to the public to generate interest in their craft.

Biscuit - great idea.

So why not go and organise such an "exhibition" in one of the empty shops?

I've played a small part in getting shopkeepers to display art and photographs as part of the upcoming Arts Festival. There should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to carry out your idea in one empty shop and show us how it's done.

Nasaroc - I might just do that as long as you promise to buy one of my wonky clay ash trays :)

Just to let you know that Paddy Power is no longer interested in opening a new betting shop in Sydenham.

Hurrah! That can only be good news. In the meantime the empty space could have been used for a venue for the amazing "Visual arts Trail" if it didn't take too long to approve and set up. I'm hopeful that other businesses will express an interest in opening up here.
