Large bird of prey sighted in Sydenham

Post by Batman »

On thursday whilst I was walking up sydenham high street (just out side Llyods bank near the station) I spotted a large bird soaring up in the sky. It was flying across the high street and was not the average type of bird you would expect to see in this area. My initial thought was that it looked like a buzzard but I'm no expert. Has anyone else sen anything like this? Does anyone know what it is? Is it living locally or has it escaped from a display team of some sort?

Cool!

I've only ever seen sparrowhawks around here personally (but then I haven't really been around trying to spot birds). I wouldn't be surprised if there are some kestrels in the area though.

It's possible there are buzzards about but these are supposed to be further out of the London area.

I'm still trying to work out the bird that has landed in my garden a few times. Similar brown and blue markings as a jay but with a white strip over its eye and a longer yellow, blunt beak (unlike a jay)??

I have seen a buzzard as well on occassion. There are lots of birds of prey about - remember there are peregrines nesting all over the city including Parliament. There are lots of pigeaons and rats about so predators will always move in to access a food source.
