Changing doctors

Post by ALIB »

I have used a doctors in Surrey/Hampshire for the past 25 years, but am now seeking a more local surgery. Something has come to light that i need to get checked in the next few weeks.

Any reccomendations and helpful tips would be good. I really don't know where to start. It is so long since i even visited my sugery, I can't even remember who the doctor is there...(and no, i don't want a check up for senile dementia etc.)

Mrs Barty has some ideas on this, Ali, but she's at home and I'm at work. Will be in touch.

Haha! Mrs Barty is just easier to type than Miss-Barty-To-Be :D

For the record, there is an ex-Mrs Barty last known in West Yorkshire about 6 years ago, and a Miss Barty-To-Be.

As long as nobody confuses the two on the next STF social no blood will be spilt :D

To get back to the question. I have used Sydenham Green for many years and found them excellent. I have also heard good things of Sydenham Wells.

One has also heard about poor service (not about these two). But we are not allowed to quote them here because of legal/professional reasons.

If anyone has had any experiences of doctors that it would be worth knowing about, then please PM me.

I have had a traumatic experience with a dentist who subsequently moved to Scotland and is now being systematically sued.

Please PM me of any places/doctors to avoid or to frequent.

The whole concept of choosing which surgery you want to register at is a bit of a red herring, as it goes.

You must register at the surgery which covers your address.

So it's Wells Park I think for you Ali, whether you like it or not

If you join the Sydenham Surgery (run-down looking place opposite Sydenham station) don't see the old guy... he can't hear a word you say, speaks over you and you get nowhere. You'll find he's ALWAYS got appointments free... I can't believe he's allowed to still practice. If you join them, always see Dr Morant, a bit scary but very thorough!!

An interesting one, worthy of a thread on its own.

I think I'd be right in saying that you can talk about your own bad experiences with a given company/organisation and leave the rest of the forum to draw its own conclusions. As long as you don't openly bad-mouth someone based on hearsay.

Hi Ali
I too have recently moved here. I can't quite bring myself to join the surgery that looks like a shed opposite the station! Have you been in.. ? It has a long eerie corridor with a flickering light and doesn't shout 'clean!' or 'professional'!! I was half expecting to it to lead to some sort of Frankenstein setting. To be fair it looks completely professional at the point of reception but I just didn't fancy it. My next nearest surgery is the Wells practice at a 15 mins walk but I am, annoyingly, just outside their catchment area, so I am about to register at Sydenham Green which is, rather irritatingly(!) a 30 mins walk. For myself, Ali, I always prefer a centre like Wells or Sydenham Green where you have a choice of doctors and both these surgeries have come highly recommended by people I've spoken to including a doctor who used to practice in the area. I'm going there today so I'll let you know how I get on. Of course, for legal reasons, everything I say here is the opinion of me only and should not be taken as fact. Your mortgage may be under threat if you cannot keep up repayments. Oh no sorry getting confused.

I'm happy with Wells Park Practice.

A real bonus is being able to book some appointments on-line!

Hi
I'm back from the docs.. well the nurse it turned out but she may as well have been a doctor for all I could tell. She was excellent, interested, helpful. I was also pleased because I couldn't make an appointment until I was registered but they managed to get me in straight away there and then as soon as I'd filled the form in. I didn't fancy a second 30 min walk today! (or £2 bus ride!).

The feedback from me is clean, professional, friendly, lots of docs and there seem to be various types of surgeries going on. I like it there. Only disappointment is it's not nearer but I don't suppose that's their fault;-)

Let us know how you get on, Ali. And prob best to register before you need an appt just in case they can't fit you in. You need to take passport or driving licence (if it's one of the newer ones with your pic on it) and a utility bill. High security.. just like when you want to rent a dvd (I've always wondered about that). Maybe they should link the two services - that would be a nice perk!

Anyway, all the best.. and thanks Nickerbockers for welcoming me to Syd. I really like it here already, esp the Lawrie Park area. I feel very well to do here:-) And love Crystal Pal Pk. Sounds like you miss it.. but hopefully you're not too far away to appreciate it still.

I'm more than happy with the Sydenham Green practice - always able to get an appointment on the day or book online. Sometimes when you turn up to get an early appointment, if the doctor's in early they'll see you straight away. Amazing! The nurses are very efficient too, and the receptionists very helpful.

PS The number that I was given to find doctors I could register with was 0800 587 7027 for Lewisham and 0208 778 8027 for Bromley. Good luck.

Partly depends on where you are, Some surgeries will not take you if you are out of catchment area which is not that big.

Bell Green always good plus Vale Med Centre on Perry Vale.

I've found Wells Park Surgery to be good. Online appointments, nice, polite staff. I use the baby clinic which is fine and the midwife there was fab.

I've moved from Sydenham Surgery to the Wells Park one because of, well, many reasons.

It's like going from 1950 to 2008 in one leap.

I did make it to the Sydenham Shed Surgery reception after conquering my fear of meeting Frankenstein and friends down there and it looked ok (bearing in mind my expectations!!) but all those paper records!! It does SO look like the 1950's... Do they use the old fashioned 2 piece phones do you know?! And speak in BBC accents? Or good ol' English Cockney?!
