Running Around Sydenham
Running Around Sydenham
Any Joggers, Trotters or Runners out there?
Fed up of running alone? A reminder that Crystal Palace Fun Runners welcomes runners and would be runners. They meet up at Paxton's statue in the Park:
Mondays 7.30pm (Beginners & Runners)
Wednesdays 7.30 (Runners)
http://crystalpalacefunrunners.co.uk/
The object is to have fun rather than break world records. And if you live in Upper Sydenham there is a convenient hole in the fence to get up to the statue very easily (PM me for info).
I had also thought of organising a trot around the borders of Sydenham as part of the summer Sydenham events - maybe starting/finishing at the Dulwich Woodhouse.
Anybody interested?

Hi
I'm definitely interested but having chatted to Jean by email am a bit concerned about getting safely to the meeting point. I don't have a car and live the opposite side of the park towards Sydenham. Perhaps the group could have a second safer meeting point in the winter months?? Just a thought.

On a good Monday night there are 15+ runners. We either break into separate groups or some take shortcuts so nobody is stretched more than they want to be. The ratio is about 60:40 female/male and age is from about 20 to 60+
Just be sure to bring gloves and a bobble hat. Easily discarded if you get too hot but protects the extremities if a chill wind sets in.
Forecast currently hopeful for tomorrow night. Anybody wanting to go PM me and we can meet somewhere warm and jog up together.

60/90 minutes and as far as you want.
It depends how many and who turns up on a Monday. Sometimes we split into different runs. Otherwise we overlap. For instance a popular run is from CP Park out past CP station and down Anerley Hill. The Robin Hood/Croydon Road corner is exactly a mile. Fast runners can either double back to the slower runners or get their breath back. Then those wanting to do 10k or more would head down to Elmer's End, across to Beckenham Odeon and then backtrack via various routes through Penge. Newer runners may choose to simply take a left down to Penge doing half the distance at a slower pace (which should always be comfortable to the slowest). again with a break every mile if you wish.
Other times we head southwards towards Selhurst or northwards to Dulwich.
I think most people find running in a small group helps you go further for less effort and enjoy it more (chatting is encouraged!).
We have people trying to sort a weight problem to people planning to do a marathon and all between. For fun running it is a good place to start. Some have been running with the club for over 20 years. The more sporty types may find neighbouring clubs like Beckenham or Dulwich Runners may stretch them more.
Just try a few times with us and see if it is right for you. If you enjoy it you can then join the club (there is no entry requirement) otherwise just disappear.
But not tonight as heavy rain is forecast. It is supposed to be fun!

Just to add that, somewhat confusingly, there are two running clubs in Dulwich: there is Dulwich Park Runners (who do a beginners course twice a year) and Dulwich Runners (who are apparently a bit more serious/ dedicated).
As Stuart says, it's worth trying out a club a few times and seeing if its right for you before joining. But wherever you go, the subs are going to be cheaper than if you join a gym, and for most of the year (not tonight though!) exercising outdoors is nicer than indoors.

If anyone needs a bit of a push when it comes to exercise, I spotted these people in Dulwich this morning:

Has anyone tried this?

If you are not sure you have enough puff to get over the hill then don't forget you can just turn up and run with your local Crystal Palace Fun Runners. There is a special beginners section every Monday night together with the regulars who also run on a Wednesday night.
There were 20 last night.
No admin, no hassle, just fun. Turn up at Joseph Paxton statue 7.30pm and just say Hi. There is a shortcut from Sydenham to save having to go around the Parade. Just PM me if you want to know how.

When it gets a little lighter in the evenings we will be trying out a Sydenham border run for the Festival.
