Trying to find Russell Street , Sydenham

Post by joker »

Hi there,
I have just joined in the hope of finding out where Russell Street is or was , I have just logged onto the 1911 census and find my Greatgrand parents living at 15 Russell Street,Sydenham.
I have not been able to find this street and wonder whether it is now long gone.
Any information or leads would be great.
Thanks, Tony.

Russell Street is now called Cheseman Street; it is off Dartmouth Road, next to Sydenham School. The picture below shows nos.34-48 during the 1930s. Since then the whole street, apart from no.7, has been redeveloped (click the picture for a hi-res version).

Is the 1911 census available already? Wasn't expecting to see that about for another couple of years.

Time to open the family tree folder again methinks.

It is, its been available for a few days at http://www.1911census.co.uk/

However, you have to register to use it and each image costs something like £2.50 to view and copy the original, or about £1 for a transcript.

The redevelopment of Cheseman St.could be related to the WW2 bomb damage maps that Steve posted earlier. These show varying degrees of damage to the street.

Just a thought

Steve do you know by any chance if you can view it free at the National Archives in Kew yet?

The map you want is Sydenham Bomb Damage 1
Don't be put off by the photo of the white bearded chap. No, it's not Santa, but Steve Grindlay. I believe the beard came off before Christmas to avoid any confusion.

Joker, according to Red Alert, a book about the bombing of SE London during WW2, two parachute mines fell on the corner of Dartmouth Road/Cheseman Street on 16 April 1941. Apparently there were 21 deaths and 25 injuries, including six policemen in the police station on the opposite side of Dartmouth Road.

Russel Street

Steve,
Thanks for the info on Russel Street , I had no idea the bomb damage info was available which has led me to where the Curtain family were living.. The family were living there certainly in 1911 as the census shows and they attended Holy Trinity Church upto at least 1917 , prior to this they had lived in Essex Mews off Central Hill and Naseby Road.
I have a picture of my Grandfather who was an outside porter at Crystal Palace railway station with his horse and cart approx 1912.
Your info has enabled me to track the movements of the family over approx a 20 year period.Invaluable Thanks.

Hi, I came to this site way over in Australia because of Tony's post back in 2009 about Cheseman St, once Russell St, where apparently his grandparents lived in number 15. My dad's family lived in number 25 until Dad emigrated to Australia about 1913. He went to school nearby, and when he turned 12, worked in the munitions place. Tony, you still there? Our folks were neighbours! Or, does anyone know- or did anyone know- the Edwards once of that address?
