It maybe a small point but Sydenham High Street is infact at top of Kirkdale where Woodman etc is. The road everyone refers to as the High Street is infact Sydenham Road.

If Sydenham can't attract a permanent fishmonger then perhaps a mobile one might be the next best thing? Is there anywhere prominent that a mobile fishmonger could operate from at the moment?

I agree with Blushingsnail. Although, on Sydenham high street on corner of Kent House Road outside the Prince Alfred Pub, there's a mobile van which sells fresh shell fish and delicious fresh king prawns most days. It would be FAB if the chap that runs this van would also sell fresh trout, sea bass etc.

(Yes Eagle I do take your point about Sydenham Road but methinks we should start a petition to change the name of the "Road" to Sydenham High Street as that's what a number of STFers and myself always refer to it as . It just feels like a high street.

Indoor Market

Post by Donk »

Its awful! I agree with Chazza, fishmongers, decent butchers (one that doesent give you the runs - take note sydenham high street man near bell green). But in the meantime the shop by Watling grove is fantastic, (sorry to plug). What is it with second had furniture stores. The stuff is tat, possibly collected from skips and priced as if it was designer! What really annoys me is when they cant sell the rubbish they just leave it on the street! It such a sorry arsed high street apart from the boutique shops which are really quite nice. Get rid of the tacky shops and lets have some decent shops. Oh to have a borough type market...

I want to see that new 'Indoor Market' disappear, it's a joke to say the least!

Going back to the possibility of a REAL indoor market. I agree with what most people have said,

- a good butcher and fishmonger
- organic veg and fruit
- x-mas market, fashion catwalks/market (if environmentally friendly and ethical even better), etc...

I know the economic situation isn't the best at the moment, but because of that wouldn't it be great if we had a market where you can not only find good quality products but they also help you to make the most of your money? A butcher/fishmonger that tells you about cheaper (but still good) cuts of meat/fish and shows you how to prepare them, then you go and get your seasonal veg/fruit from another stalls that might be doing something similar if you're vegetarian, etc.

After all, even what we eat is a 'fashion', and that often means that good quality/cheapper alternatives might be overlooked. If we have a local market with those options available everyone wins, farmers, our pockets, the environment etc.

I want good quiality, locally sourced products, but can I get that in the high street? not really. Sainsbury is the closer altertative I have at the moment.
