If you could say something to thieves and muggers?

Post by kon »

I'm a design student working on a project about street crimes especially personal robberies.

If you have been a victim or know someone who has been attacked or mugged, How do you feel ? And if you have a chance to say something back to those thieves and muggers what would you say

For genuine reactions you may wish to use the search facility to see what people wrote here on being mugged/seeing a mugging. Here are a couple of recent threads:

http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2705
http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2878

I remember Nork1's thread but can't find it now, anyone?

I'd say, go and get a job so you can make your OWN money, buy your OWN i-pod/mobile phone etc and stop taking them from other people who've scrimped and saved to provide for themselves!!

I'd also say how I think it's pathetic this selfish culture there is now, that 'live for the moment' has been taken SO literally that nobody cares about anybody else or the consequences of their actions - it's 'I want this, I want it now, I'm gonna have it' whether that means stealing, pulling a gun, stabbing someone etc... okay that's extremists, but it's getting all too common and it's scary.

I don't think I would want to say anything, actually. I'm not sure if hearing from their victims would have much effect on them.

I would prefer to be told they had died of something nasty.

I agree 100% with previous post. Transportation to Botony Bay too good for them . How about sending them to The Undemocratic Republic of The Congo .

Most muggers are young men. Most young male offenders give up offending after 25. Do we really want to terminate a life, marriage & family for a youthful escapade?

Putting them in jail also has a dodgy outcome. Uncomfortable facts for anyone who has been mugged. Including me.

What would I say? "Why did you pick on me?". Might stop it happening again.

That's the point Eagle. One side sees it as just an easy iPod. The other as a life shocking experience. Getting the youngster to both understand and care about the consequences of his action is the challenge.

I know one feels very, very angry and its hard to avoid revenge. Is that going to help sort the perpetrator? I don't know the answer. I don't think anyone has.

I think that people are quick to want the death sentence back for all sorts of crimes, but if it was brought back for everything from stealing to paedophilia it would lose all meaning.

It'd be worth a try getting these little brats to understand what they've done, I've heard it work before when they've had to face their victim and realise the full implication of their actions... which goes back to what I said, it's all about living for the moment and sod the implications to ANYONE as a result!

Thank you everyone for their comments,I'm really appreciated.

I realized that saying anything back may not have any effect on thieves, but at least I think it's good to be able to release the anger and express any emotions. I know how frustrating it is when one can only sit and wait before the justice is brought up on the bad guy. My friend was attacked quite badly and had to wait for a year and half before his offenders recieved their punishment.

This is how I was inspired to do this project and I hope my design can do more than trying to prevent things form happening and rathercreate a chance to tackle back in some way...safe way of course.

Thanks

"I despise you. I despise your gang 'culture'. When you're on your own watch your back because I'm going to do to you exactly what you did to me. I am going to hurt you. I am going to scar you. I'm not going to tell you where or when but it WILL happen. You have chosen to live by those rules so you must accept the consequences."

Hello Eagle , thanks for your interest. My friend was brutally beaten by for young black teens and two of them got away because they were underage and the other two got three years in jail. I find it unfair !! There is no such thing as underage, If a kid is brave enough to commit serious harm to the elder citizens, then they should too be able to accept the consequences and responsible and a grown man.

I agree 100%
3 years is a joke for this sort of crime. Probably out in a year.

I am afraid the law is an ass . Underage or not they should be behind bars. Violently assaulting a fellow citizen and not in prison. Makes you want to give up .
You get the society you deserve , guess someone telling us something,.

Not sure what you mean ( project )
Are you saying that all the violent criminals should NOT have gone to prison for many years.
