No change here then; just like you mob at Westminster.............getting on the bandwagon!

On you website you have:-
"Sign the Petition to save jobs and wards at Lewisham Hospital"

Most of us remember the 18 years of Tory cuts and the neglect of Public Services during that time

Lewisham Hospital

Post by James Cleverly »

Eagle,

What bandwagon? I was born in Lewisham Hospital, as were both my sons, my mother worked there for almost 30 years, I care deeply about the Hospital, the people that work there and the community it serves.

Bringing up the false ogre of the last Conservative government has been the Labour party trick since coming into office, it is now ancient history. The Conservative party is committed to a well funded and effective NHS, it is the current Government which is causing ward closures and job losses up and down the country. And what did Gordon Brown have to say about the issue in this week’s budget? Nothing.

If you are happy with the closures then fine, if not then I would urge you to put party prejudices aside and oppose the cuts. Harping on about the past won’t help the nurses and support staff who face redundancy at Lewisham.

Regards

What is your attitude to the further development of Bell Green along largely retail lines?

And what would you say to someone like me who is reluctant to vote for someone who only shows their face at election time.

At the last General Election (not that long ago) the Conservatives were cutting billions on Public Spending......................have we got to forget that as well.

This is about a future local election which has little to do with the NHS.

What surely is more relevant is James' projection on what would be the differences in the revenue of a conservative Lewisham and the split between council tax and other charges. Secondly if this were to be lower than Labour - what expenditure differences would be?

BTW I know it is tempting to fudge the issue by claiming savings through 'effiencies'. But all parties claim them and they are seldom realised. Realisation has more to do with the professional calibre of the officers than the political colour of the politicians.

Sorry about replying to a number of posts at once but I have been away, spending some time with the family and I am limiting my computer usage.

I don't know the full details of the Bell Green development options but in general I am not a fan of retail only developments. They tend to draw people away from town centres and local shops; this it turn makes it harder for local traders to stay in business. Once they start to close down the heart of an area is lost and the downward spiral begins.

While my personal preferences shouldn't be the main factor in planning consent I will tell you what I think is generally preferable in urban development. I like mixed residential (mixed sizes including starter homes and family homes with gardens), services (doctors surgeries, schools etc.), leisure facilities and retail.

I agree with you that you should be sceptical of someone who only appears at election time, I assume you mean the Lib Dem candidate. As for me, I have lived in the borough almost my whole life and I have been involved in a number of campaigns and community groups.

Lewisham is a big place and I am well aware that there are parts of the borough that I do not know well and where I am not well known, that is why I wrote to introduce myself on this forum.

From your posts I don't imagine that there is much chance that you are going to be swayed by any points that I might make but I will answer you post because I don't want you or anyone else thinking that I am running away from the issue.

At the last General Election the Conservatives promised to increase public spending, and match Labour spending on health and education. The "cuts" that you refer to was the £35Billion of waste which was identified by the James Report (even Labour's own Gershon report identified £20+ Billion in waste, what are they doing about that?). Labour tried to paint Conservative plans to cut this waste as public spending cuts, a claim rubbished by all independent commentators, indeed Nick Robinson (then ITV's political Editor) said to Tony Blair about this claim "Don't you think that you can win this election without misrepresenting your opponent’s policies?"

You are right, this election is mainly about local issues but I will use the profile that Mayor of Lewisham provides to fight over issues like local health cuts.

It is almost impossible for me to commit to council tax levels for next year, I have no idea what the financial state of the council will be or, more significant, what Ken Livingston's increase will be (it was 13% this year 600% the rate of inflation). What I will promise is that I will treat local tax revenue as your money, not mine. This will means that I will be able to promise lower council tax than either Labour or the Lib Dems, it is easy to disregard efficiency savings as irrelevant but please remember that Conservative Wandsworth has council tax at half the level of Lewisham and services rated as excellent by the ONS.
