Firework Display to remain an annual event at Blackheath
The Mayor of Lewisham has given an assurance that the highly popular firework display at Blackheath will continue to be an annual event.
Sir Steve Bullock made the announcement at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on 4 November and was responding to Councillors calls to continue to fund the event. Lewisham Councillors had met to discuss the £10million savings that need to be made this coming financial year. The savings need to be found as part of the Government’s requirement to make annual efficiency savings of 3 per cent as well as being due to financial pressures created by the recent economic downturn.
Sir Steve said: “We all recognise the firework display is a hugely popular social event for Lewisham and Greenwich residents. It provides many people with a lot of pleasure.
“I also recognise that by organising a central event, we are reducing the number of potential accidents that occur during private displays that take place in the back garden. Every year many people put themselves at risk of severe burns and a single organised event is a much safer way of enjoying this time of year.”
“However, given the financial pressures facing the Council we will need to explore alternative ways of seeking financial support. Around 100,000 people attended last year’s event and this number grows every year. Crowd control and public safety don’t come cheap. We need to cover the costs of ensuring public safety, as well as the cost of the fireworks themselves.”
“I do not want to pre-empt any wider decisions or discussions on the Council’s budget that will take place over the coming weeks and months but I thought it important to make my intention clear on this issue at this point. I want to let everyone know who will be there at Saturday’s firework display that they don’t have to worry about what happens next year.”
The firework display is currently joint-funded by Lewisham and Greenwich Councils and supported by GLC Ltd.
