The response from Lewisham in the planning documents sets out the pollution on site:

"The intrusive investigation works which have been undertaken at the site have identified elevated levels of PAH's, metals and benzene across the wider site which exceed the generic assessment criteria for human health for a residential end use (lead, arsenic, benzene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo (a) pyrene, benzo(b)fluranthene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, naphthalene, cyanide, beryllium and aromatic TPH's). Asbestos has also been identified at the site.

Limited ground gas monitoring has been undertaken at the site, with the current available monitoring data, the report recommends that gas protection measures will be required in line with Characteristic Situation 2. However, if planning permission is granted further gas monitoring will be required to complete the data gaps and ensure that Characteristic Situation 2 gas protection measures are appropriate for this site.

Groundwater monitoring has been undertaken at the site which has identified elevated levels of trichlorofluromethane, vinyl chloride, TPH's and benzene which were recorded above the Groundwater Assessment criteria for inhalation exposure for VOC's originating from groundwater.

The intrusive investigations works undertaken by CGL in 2023, which included investigation of soils and groundwater both outside and inside the infilled gas holders, indicated that 'a slight hydrocarbon/organic odour was noted at most of the exploratory positions with visual evidence of contamination/anthropogenic materials also observed at all positions'."

We also know that the gas holder tanks themselves were emptied of the sludge in them, but then refilled with material brought in from off site. It should be noted that nothing appears to have grown where the tanks are, for 4 years since demolition. Suggesting the material brought in was not particularly clean.

on the satellite image it looks like the loose sandy concrete used beneath paving stones... Perhaps it was treated to prevent weeds.
