Catford Prefabs

Post by bensonby »

An interesting article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7633550.stm

they want to give listed status to the prefab estate on the borough, its between the Grove Park cemetery and Catford. Lewisham council wants to demolish them.

I've actually been inside one, and whilst not particularly modern, I was surprised at how nice they can be inside. They were only designed to be emrgency temporary measures though...

Interesting - I wonder if this will be succesful? There are two more prefabs still standing on Lordship Lane, but were there any in Sydenham?

I seem to remember prefabs in Longton Grove on the left hand side coming from Jews Walk, I "walked out" with a delightful young lady who lived in one (c 1954).

Well according to the bomb damage map (which can be found on another thread) there were quite a few damaged houses round there, so that fits. So did the prefabs last until Bealieu Avenue was created and the new houses on Longton Grove built?
