Mayor's Lewisham Foodbank appeal passes £80k

Post by JGD »

It is great to see the coordinated effort from Lewisham kick-in.

By April 9, over 2,000 people had donated £80,560, less than a month after the appeal's launch.
“Their generosity means the foodbank can continue to support vulnerable residents in Lewisham at a time when they need it most.”

People giving donations to the appeal have thanked the charity for its “incredible work”.
Whilst Mayor Damien Egan said this is amazing, the photo-op has him standing much too close to the volunteer. It must be remembered that no-one is immune from the air-borne spread of the virus - hence we have a two metre rule.

Promoting the appeal and food distribution activity is important. More importantly a good example must always be set - there a few hardy souls out there who don't think the rules apply to them and who will point out examples of when they think they see exception.

Almost forgot - there is an update on how things work and how requests for assistance can be made.
From Monday, April 6, the foodbank suspended the red voucher system after forming a partnership with Lewisham Council, Lewisham Local, Voluntary Services, and Age UK.

All referrals for food will now go through Lewisham Local’s online form or helpline.

I think this shows that even in a time of crisis we can still care for others. Well done Lewisham!
