Two new shops open/opening that I thought I’d flag up in case people don’t commonly head that way:
- Icy Cakes is open as of today and specialises in cupcakes, traybakes, cakes and also have a small selection other things on the menu (eg: patties, sandwiches). Only a small place so more takeaway then sit in (think they have a side bar with a few stools). Next to Lindo Wheels bike shop.
- Saigon Cafe opening soon - “Authentic Vietnamese Street food”. Next to the chemist.
New shops on Kirkdale
Re: New shops on Kirkdale
There was an opening party at the cakes place on Sunday. Quite comical seeing so many trying to cram in to such a small space. But I wish them well!
Re: New shops on Kirkdale
I also noticed the shop next to the bra shop being fitted out, my nosy attempt didn't yield any results.
Re: New shops on Kirkdale
The short-lived waffle place is becoming Saigon Cafe, offering Vietnamese street food. Sounds promising... They were doing signage today.

The unit next to the Fitting Studio on Kirkdale is going to be a hairdressers...

I swear we have at least 10 barbers / hairdressers on Sydenham high street already...
Re: New shops on Kirkdale
More than that. Between the station and the Dolphin there is 13 places to get your hair cut. Amazing amount!

What I don’t get is howcome there are never any good new restaurants or food options opening? The Saigon cafe is a perfect example of what the high street needs.
The demographic of people has changed alot over the last few years. Places like the Greyhound and Mama Dough prove there is a market willing to pay money for nicer options.
It’s actually gone backwards with cherry and ice closing and the replacement for the vegan restaurant being yet another barber. The adjacent vacant shop is another real estate agent, again we already have about 10...

Hi Makesydenhamgreat and welcome. The problem for eateries in Sydenham is that they don't attract enough bums on seats to stay viable with high rent and rates. Sydenamites central like to go "out" to the surrounds like CP, Beckenham, East Dulwich but few outsiders are attracted to come here. Nothing wrong with barbers and nail bars etc and good luck to them.
Vietnamese street food places used to be popular up town a decade ago then all but disappeared. As someone said earlier eating habits have changed generally so the new Saigon cafe should be in with a good chance, fingers crossed.

Sign up on a shop opposite the piano place about a new American bar, shish etc coming soon. Makes a change from another hairdresser!
