I have used them for all my blinds and they're fine. The manager is of the 'old school' and a real gentleman who uses a duplicate book to record the orders. The measuring/fitting contractor who he uses is self employed and you will be asked to contact him direct to arrange for him to come and measure and then again to fit. He's good at his job but last time he came to us he left all the cardboard in the bedroom. Which I thought was a bit orf...
You will have to pay a deposit before they will order anything for you. I didn't realise this one time and thought my curtains were being made and they weren't, not till I took some money in.
I would use them again certainly, mainly because they're local and conveinient.

I went there to get some cheap plain curtains (most of what they do is patterned and quite chintzy, plain curtains don't sell apparently) but they had one that matched our needs: simple, plain, cheap.

I wasn't sure about the size so I said I'd call on Monday to confirm the sizes.

I paid a deposit (20 quid) which they insisted on.

On the Monday I called to cancel the order (I had kindly been given given curtains from my parents to tide us over until we can afford proper blinds or shutters). She was quite abrasive on the phone. They said they had ordered them and that they couldn't cancel the order because they had to order them in specially (they still took one week to arrive). So I lost my deposit.

So personally I don't recommend them and I later found better curtains, that were also cheaper in Argos.

I must admit poped in today to ask about net curtains and was slightly of put by the attitude of the lady at the counter. Seemed a bit abrupt

I won't use them as the lady was very sneery with me, because I didn't know the technical terms of curtain making or what a "window reveal" was. I'll stick to John Lewis! And that's a shame, because it would be nice to think you could go to little local shops for friendly advice.

There's also a place in Penge, but that was too pricey for me. Actually having said I'd stick to John Lewis, I did use the Curtain Factory in Finchley last time and they were very helpful ... and cheap! I think there may be a second hand curtain shop in West Dulwich. I might try them next time.

I would like to say once again I found the service , price and quality very good when I visited yesterday.
My original post had been because when I went in for an enquiry I was not totally happy with service but when I went back Friday it was totally excellent and I would happily revisit and recommend to others

In reply to savvy, I didn't say your curtains were chintzy, I didn't mean to imply they were or to infer anything about your taste, I appologise if you thought i did, as I also did in a PM to you. I was only replying with my own, and my wifes personal experience of the shop, not in response to your post.

I know you weren't, I was only making an aside. I should have put a smiley so my intention would have been clearer. Sorry if I came across as irked - I wasn't, really!

If I put on anymore weight I'm going to have to. That Chinese takeaway I mentioned last night did me no favours at all.

I'm not sure if this has been covered here already, but the curtain shop is due to close shortly and is having a closing down sale. According to comments on the www.se23.com website, this is because of the landlord's demands for higher rent
http://www.se23.com/forum/showthread.ph ... 1#pid12441

I think it's rather sad to see it close, and it would make the high street look worse, just as it seems that plans are underway to make it look better. It's also a relatively large site just off the Thorpe estate, so its closure will be quite visible to passers by.

By the way, if anyone's interested, the site is available through Aston Rose, although as I can't see details on their website I don't know how much they would charge.

Hello Thomas
Yes I could not believe the rent being asked. These landlords should get real.
I have found service excellent and also disapointed they are having to close.

I wonder if the landlord will get the money they are seeking? This is not the best time to be asking for higher rent!

Thomas
If I can recall my conversation the rent and council tax would be about GBP 48 k pa .
That means would have to earn virtually GBP 1k per week just to pay these bills not to mention staff , heat and lighting , stock etc.
It is a wonder there are any shops open in Sydenham Road.

Yes, that would require them to sell rather a lot of curtains! I don't know how this compares with (1) other sites on the high street and (2) other high streets (empty shops are not unique to Sydenham) so would welcome more informed views than mine.

Hopefully the economic downturn (with the prospect of capital gains seemingly far into the future) will encourage landlords to be a bit more flexible in their rents.

But landlords need to pay the bills too, and in the current economic climate that ain't easy for them either.

I'm sure there are plenty of landlords out there struggling with increased mortgage payments, etc. Not that I'm defending them, my point is just that it's probably unlikely to see any increased flexibility in rental charges....
