Help Wanted Please

Post by lin »

I will keep this brief, but I am currently researching my family tree and my great grandfather's brother moved to Sydenham in 1852 to Willow Walk, then later to Wells Road. He was a Wheelwright and Coachbuilder and worked from a workshop in Wells Road.

Could someone tell me if these roads still exist as according to Google Maps they don't and I was planning a visit to see the old homes he had and I don't want to travel all that way to find they have been flattened.

Also, can anyone point me in the right direction for local history for Sydenham as I know absolutely nothing about the area.

Many thanks

Wells Road is now Wells Park Road and there is a Willow Way which might have been Willow Walk. I would say that there is a fair chance that the buildings he used have been demolished so I wouldn't get your hopes up! There are some good books about local history with old photos in them which you might find useful. The "town museum and gallery" section in this forum does contain a lot of information about local history as well, and is a useful means of discussing particular questions you might have. You might also find it useful to look at some old maps of the area - these have been republished by Alan Godfrey and can be bought from the Kirkdale bookshop in Sydenham town centre or online at http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/
