Pilates

Post by mumofanangel »

I have never done pilates before but since having little ones really suffer with backache and read somewhere that pilates can be very beneficial, am now seriously considering joining the beginners class in Silverdale Rd but have never done pilates or been to the gym in years, was wondering if it is suited to someone like myself?(honestly?)

Pilates can most definitely be beneficial for back problems because it strengthens the core muscles (ie abdominals, etc) and therefore helps you support your own weight while reducing the load on your spine.

That said, I would suggest double-checking with your GP before starting classes, just in case it's not suitable for your back problems.

In terms of whether it's suitable for someone who's never done it before and hasn't been to the gym in years... yes, absolutely. Pilates or yoga are both very good ways of getting back into fitness as they can be done at all different levels and don't involve leaping around an exercise studio getting all out of breath or anything ;)

I used to go to Adam's class at Venner Road ( I think he also teaches at Silverdale), and i would highly recommend them. Unfortunately I don't have the time to go anymore but his wednesday morning class would be as much a giggle as an exercise class.
