Chinese Takeaway
Chinese Takeaway
I realised tonight why Golden City Chinese Restaurant has been around for such a long time. There food is really good!,I mean really good! and the delivery was good as well.Keep up the good work
Hmmmm... I went there not so long ago and lived to tell the tale! It seemed ok but definitely not great, the food was fairly flavourless. On the other hand, I tried the takeaway on Dartmouth Road, just near the roundabout with Kirkdale (can't remember what it's called, sorry) and it was surprisingly good.. much better than Golden City IMHO!
Ooooh I love their food, comfort food on a Sunday night. Haven't been able to have any for ages but you've got my mouth watering again now... can't wait for this Sunday to come. I'm going to revive the Savvy tradition and s0d the diet. Never had food poisoning from ANY restaurant EVER.... I have felt rough on a Sunday morning though ..... Mr Savvy just noted "some people don't take into account the amount of alcohol they had with their food the night before".
Mmmm.... that orange jelly is the MSG that so many people I know have an allegy to. Daddycat had a piece of duck stuck to the roof of his mouth recently and I had to peel it off - Yuk!
We use Golden City for takeaways and cheap lunches out, although I have my suspicions - I'd rather have fresh food and wait for an hour, than a takeaway delivered within 10 mins. I didn't think egg fried rice was meant to be brown!
There really is a market for a healthier Chinese/Thai alternative in Sydenham. Forest Hill and Crystal Palace both have noodle bars....

See I can't get my head around this MSG in food thing... in Australia (where I came from nearly 8 years ago) all Chinese restaurants have been proudly proclaiming "no MSG" for as long as I can remember as it's widely considered to be very bad for you, and we'd never have considered eating from a restaurant that used MSG. But, I don't actually know what it's meant to do to you... perhaps it makes you turn into orange gloop????mummycat wrote:Mmmm.... that orange jelly is the MSG that so many people I know have an allegy to. Chinese restaurant
I agree. I have found Golden City's food very avearge. There is definately a need for somewhere that does high quality chinese or Japense food. Oh, if only Wagamama would open up here.
Shall we start a campaign? The old HSBC (?) (closed bank opposite Lloyds) would be the perfect place!
MSG is found in surprising places, just look at the ingredients list of vegetable Oxo cubes (never had the meat ones). I was pretty surprised when I spotted this and threw them away!

I live up that way and really like the food served in the curry house, chinese and kebab shop (I think they're called The Balti House, Lin Yong and Charcoal Grill).natbeuk wrote:Hmmmm... In fact, I've never felt the need to venture down to the High St to find an alternative (although reading some of the good reviews about other takeaways/restaurants along the High St does tempt me..!).
One of my bugbears actually is that takeaways hugely appeal to single, young people due to their ease and convenience - but that their free delivery is above the cost of a single meal. There are so many times when I'm exhausted at home, really don't want to venture out into the night and could just do with a delivery. But after salivating over all the menus that get dropped through my door, I invariably always mooch around the corner to the local 3 above to collect in person!
If any restauranteurs are reading - please consider lowering the minimum delivery charge, I'm sure you'd get plenty of repeat business!
Re: Chinese restaurant
It can be in quite a lot of savoury things. Preservative number 621 it's disguised as... worth avoiding, even if I don't really know what's so bad about it!poppy wrote: MSG is found in surprising places, just look at the ingredients list of vegetable Oxo cubes (never had the meat ones). Hmmm, shall have to try the curry and kebabs then!!Gaz wrote:

And yep, agreed on that one - although I like to think the walk to the shop helps burn off some of the calories that I'm about to consume thereby making it much healthier
I heard that MSG is a naturally occurring substance and if food has MSG put in it then less salt needs to be added to make the food tasty, which makes it more healthy!natbeuk wrote: See I can't get my head around this MSG in food thing... in Australia (where I came from nearly 8 years ago) all Chinese restaurants have been proudly proclaiming "no MSG" for as long as I can remember as it's widely considered to be very bad for you, and we'd never have considered eating from a restaurant that used MSG. Hmmm.. not sure that's strictly true!!! I think ths jury is still out on how evil MSG is or isn't http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/monoso ... te/AN01251Juwlz wrote:I heard that MSG is a naturally occurring substance and if food has MSG put in it then less salt needs to be added to make the food tasty, which makes it more healthy!natbeuk wrote: See I can't get my head around this MSG in food thing... in Australia (where I came from nearly 8 years ago) all Chinese restaurants have been proudly proclaiming "no MSG" for as long as I can remember as it's widely considered to be very bad for you, and we'd never have considered eating from a restaurant that used MSG. but I'd really shy away from saying it's actually good for you
