The Lane Rental charge scheme has been a success on the Tfl roads in London were deployed so far. The 'Lane Rental" funds raised have created innovation, better joined up approach between Utilities providers (Gas, Thames etc) and highway authority. It does *not* always cost more to Utilities Services, as the scheme includes a 'Lane Rental Waiver' option to specifically incentivise smarter working and collaboration. The scheme has also allowed future proofing highways during major work. E.g better coordination can mean reduced times the same section of the road being dug over.
