Forgive me if this has some up before.
Has anyone any pictures of these? I find the fountains and the gardens almost as interesting as the palace itself.
I think if one thing WAS to be resurected from the past, I'd put the fountains and perhaps the terrace with the Italian gardens at the top of my list. Having been to Barcelona the crowds around the fountains with their coloured lights were mesmerised.
Shame they weren't included in the LDA plan. They would have been a fantastic glimpse of the park as it was and then they could suppliment it with other more modern parts of the park. Then there would be a point of reference for the evolution of the park.
The likes of Falkor, Terry etc must have some reference to this aside from the usual B&W postcards we have all seen...surely?

Sorry to have taken to long to respond.
Not much of a step up from a black and white postcard, and an illustration perhaps of why I tend not to post in the original sepia, improve the contrast a little and what you get is chocolate!
All but the terraces, the much reduced "Grand Fountain" and water temples were left, before the "Festival of Empire" of 1911 swept them and the Rosery away. Falkor posted a pic, by Arthur Talbot I think, of a scrap of the cascades still around in the 50's. All of which before the general use of colour photography.
As to the LDA's plans, I don't think much, and am horrified about their proposal to drive two huge ramps through the terraces, which apart from possibly cutting through all the victorian cast-iron pipework for the original fountains, would completely inhibit all the many purposes that the terraces have been used for since the Palace burnt down. The idea maybe for disabled access, though they'll probably have to dodge all the skateboarders that will appear. Not that I am holding my breathe re the LDA and the probable change of cast members what with the recent election etc.
I suggest an extension of John Greatorex's plan re the Paxtons units which made up the original building. Two will soon be erected as part of his "Paxton's Corner." How about erecting a whole line of them to mark out the outline of the building. They're authentic, would make a nice pergola, give an idea of what was there, and not cost 67 million pounds.
Just my threepennyworth!

Brilliant post. I take it this is a rare early picture.
I thought i'd have a go at retouching the pic Terry...it will never be perfect but if you choose one channel and go into curves in photoshop you can increase the contrast without losing detail.
I hope that's ok, if not I will delete it.
Cheers

Anyone else got any images of the fountains in use?

No problem, it's not my image, I am just the one who has it during it's 150 plus history, [wonder where it's been since then] It's not from a library or other website, and I made the scan. Sorry if i sound a little touchy. Feel free to print out as t-shirts, mugs, etc. If anyone askes, tell them to check out Sydenham Town forum.
As to more images, there are few of the fountains working, Falkor was v.proud of one of them, I'm just too tired this evening to search for it.
