Dear all,

On the 17th August 2005 @ 6pm the management of the Greyhound will be holding a meet and greet where you can meet with Cynthia, the new licensee and Will the new area manager. The event is highly informal with a small finger buffet and glass of wine available to all attendees.

The evening is planned to informative about some new changes to the Greyhound and also your chance to ask management some questions and get some honest and updated answers.

It will not be allowed to become a snipeing session or mini world war, the aim is to be open and honest and i am sure you will more than happy to offer the olive branch in an aim to move the pub and area forward.

Please remember neither Cynthia or Will can change the past but can attemopt to improve the future!

Anybody is welcome from traders, residents to passer bys.

i would say that is a very positive move.

i will do my best to attend, although as my wife is due to give birth, on or around that date, it may not prove possible.

We attended the Meet & Greet as planned and felt that it was a very positive step forward and also understand that Cynthia and staff have their work cut out to make this pub a success. Quite clearly the Brewery also need to commit the resources and support as without this it will be difficult to turn words into action.

We will certainly pop in to see how things are shaping up and look forward to the changes to be made. It was reassuring to know that we can approach the Managment Team if we have any concerns.

Not to labour the point but we are also looking forward to the planting of the flower beds at the front in the Spring and the trees being lopped at the back, but we understand that this will take a bit of time.

Thanks you to Cynthia and staff for their hospitality. We will be reporting back from time to time.

NICE MEETING. PUB IS DOOMED TO FAILURE. WALK PAST THAT EXCUSE FOR A PUB ON ANY EARLY SUNNY EVENING AND TAKE A LOOK AT THE PUNTERS. MORE IMPORTANTLY TAKE A LOOK AT THE TABLES. WHAT DO YOU SEE ? NOTHING, YOU MAY SEE ONE EMPTY BOTTLE OF BEER BETWEEN A TABLE FULL OF SYDENHAM YOUTH, THAT AINT GONNA BRING IN THE REVENUE GUYS. HOWEVER, IF YOU WANT TO BUY DRUGS OR IN FACT SMOKE OR SNIFF THEM WHILST WATCHING KIDS DOING WHEELIES UP & DOWN ON THEIR MOUNTAIN BIKES (ASSUMING THEY BELONG TO THEM) BLOCKING THE PAVEMENT THEN THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. ALTERNATIVELY YOU COULD WONDER INSIDE PAST THE LOOKS AND STARES OF THE LOCALS AND TRY TO RELAX AND HAVE A FRIENDLY GAME OF POOL, GO ON TRY IT, ITS DEFINATELY AN EXPERIENCE. IF YOU WANNA DO SOMETHING TO SORT THIS PLACE OUT MAKE IT MORE APPEALING TO THE PASSING TRADE, DO WHAT YOU DID WITH THE CARPARK. ANYONE NOT USING THE PUB CANT USE THE CAR PARK, ANYONE NOT USING THE PUB TO DRINK SHOULDNT BE TAKING UP TABLE SPACE, IF THE PUB LOOKS ROUGH ON THE OUTSIDE THE PEOPLE WITH MONEY TO SPEND ARE NOT GOING TO GO IN ARE THEY, JUST LOOK AT THE WEEKLY TAKINGS I BET THEY AINT TO CLEVER. ANYWAY I DO WISH YOU ALL THE BEST COS IT WAS QUITE A NICE PUB AND SYDENHAM COULD DO WITH SOMETHING THAT RESEMBLES A NICE PLACE TO DRINK. I HOPE CYNTHIA CAN TURN THIS PLACE AROUND COS WORD IS SHE DEFINATELY HAS THE ENTHUSIASM

You may have noticed yesterday (Monday) that work has started on the renovation of the pub. Cynthia says it should take three weeks.

She also has a ambitious charity programme for later this month. I will post details on the main site later today.

The Greyhound goes green!

Tubs of shrubs on the forecourt and plants in the neglected flower beds by the front door! It makes one realise just how stark and unwelcoming the appearance of this pub has been over the past six years or so!

Cobbs Corner, the gateway to Sydenham, is looking up. Shame about the roundabout!

Been into the Greyhound for the first time in a year this past weekend (I stopped going because the people atmosphere and pub in general were just horrible)

I have to say paint job is nice but the interior and the genernal atmosphere with in the pub is exactly as it was last time I went - I for one will not be going to this pub untill the undesirables that make it for me "STILL" very unwelcoming are gone.

Im not snooty but I just can't stand the clientele that at present "drink" - I use the term loosely (I think hang about - mainly without a drink) in and around the pub at present are gone.

im sure all will agree that a short bus hope in either direction from Sydenham brings a welcome friendly pub (Westow Hill, Lordship Lane or many NICE pubs in forest Hill.

Im not an old man Im in my mid 20's and even for me its just not a nice place to drink and meet friends

Interesting you should feel that way because we took a deep breath and walked through the door yesterday evening for the first time in 3 years...

From where I was standing, things are looking up. We should all be mindful that change will take more than enthusiasm and a lick of paint but the place was very clean, very tidy and the atmosphere was laid back and friendly. There were people chatting (with drinks) at most of the tables and the music was mainstream and quiet enough to talk without raising your voice. There were even some newspapers at the bar for anyone who just wanted a quiet drink in a comfy chair and a quick read of the Independent !

I'll certainly make an effort to support the new managers over the coming months. Their biggest problem is going to be that people simply dont spend their money in Sydenham which is going to be a difficult trend to break.

So its a thumbs up from me...

We went there for lunch the other day - surprisingly nice! Relaxed and friendly and free papers too! The food is a bit predictable but the surroundings were greatly improved and the service was pretty good.

Just an idea - does anyone think there would be an appetite for the French Market to come back to the pub carpark? I seem to remember it made a visit a couple of years ago and was quite popular...

It might also be a way to get more people to give the Greyhound another go...

There is a French Market in Penge this week (until Saturday, I think). I'm currently eating Ardennes Wild Boar baguette 'cos I can't resist food from a country that is serious about it.

BTW the English Market in Penge appears to have collapsed completely giving les frogs a clear run.

hmmmm!

all this talk of undesirables,this is a pub we are talking about a place where locals go to have a drink and socialise with other locals,i think the pub represents the local populus quite well,its a real mix.

if you want one of those pratty places where all the pretentious types go,then go to dulwich!

please people stop trying to turn sydenham and forest hill into something it isnt,wait until you can afford to buy in one of those sorts of areas and then do,dont fall for esate agents speak,forest hill isnt a 'village'ffs!
