Interesting view of St. Barts... (WESTWOOD HILL PHOTOS!)

Post by Falkor »

...because it shows those tall squarish blocks at the bottom of Westwood Hill! I'm going to see if I can find reference to them in my books.

Can't find a reference of any kind, except a photo and caption about 2 more buildings in-between the above blocks and Cobb's corner. The above photo is the best I've found to show those blocks.

I have this, from an original glass negative:

The building on the right is the original St Bart's vicarage; part of the wall still survives in front of the present vicarage. Between the vicarage and the church is the terrace of three Victorian villas, built in the late 1850s, shown in the picture above.

Bloody hell, that's one heck of a rare! Not seen that before... thanks for sharing with us. There's a couple of others in the set that haven't been published in any form, either, considering I don't recognise them. I think another part of Westwood Hill, which I almost didn't even recognise at all from one picture at LLS, could certainly do with some more examination. I'm going to post up some more pics to add to this topic. They mainly feature the clearing of Hillcrest Road and pics of houses where flats now stand on the corner of Amberley Grove. The following picture looks like it might be of one of those that got demolished:

Again, not all of Westwood Hill has sufficiently been covered before...

That house still stands, Falkor. It is the building referred to in this thread.

These present day photos should help set the scene for the next set of historical photos I'm going to post...
Image
Hillcrest Road vicinity (a former entrance to the road was around about here)

Image
Hillcrest Road vicinity nearing the junction with High Level Drive (formally one of 2 entrances to Hillcrest Road)

Image
High Level Drive junction--old surviving houses begin here.

Image
It's hard to notice the surviving old buildings up this hill, since they are hidden away for the most part by trees.

Image
Flats near the junction with Crystal Palace Park Road (most likely replaced an older building)

Image
One of the old houses obscured by trees.

Image

Image
Cut off point between old houses on the north side of the road and Ormanton Road estate, which replaced some older buildings (some of these have been discussed before (Longton Hotel etc).

Image
Survivors on the south side.

Image
Looking down the hill with the Ormanton Road Estate on the left.

Image
Cut off point between 2 types of houses on the south side (left = old; right = oldist)

Image
The surviving 41 Westwood Hill referred to above by Steve? This is the junction of Charleville Circus so the other house must be Caen Tower, albeit without it's tower.

Cut off point between old survivors and Amberly Grove junction flats.

I've finally sussed out all the photos (except the penultimate one); most were not actually taken in the Hillcrest Road vicinity, but at the site of present day Beaulieu Avenue.

Hi there,

just registered. I was searching for images of Hillcrest Road as it was before they built the estate. There is a lovely old image of the road. I was born in number 5 Hillcrest Road as were two of my sisters and remember the houses looking as they did in the image. We moved from there in 1970 when the local council were looking to demolish the street (I guess to build the new estate). I would really like to use the image in a short piece I have written which focuses on one particular memory and wondered if you could tell me where I can get permission to use the image. It was quite an eerie feeling seeing the picture. I was only 7 when we left there but remember it so well. If you can tell me who owns the copyright to the picture that would be great.

Many thanks for your kind assistance and thank you for the trip down memory lane.

Best wishes,

Liola
