where my ancestors were living

Post by carlos romero »

My grandmother (female side of my mother's line) and her father were "in service" to a Sydenham family from 1897 to 1910 (1908 in respect to my grandmother as she married then); and I would like a photo of the house and it's grounds from some time between 1897 and 1907. Can anyone help? The house in question was "Torrington", 63 West Hill, and was the home of George William Vidal and his wife Cecilia upon their return to England upon his retirement from the Indian Civil Service in 1897. The house was previously known as "The Roccles"

It seems Westwood Hill SE26 was formerly known as West Hill. There are still a number of large houses on this road but it looks like number 63 was replaced with a block of flats.

There is however a Torrington Court on Westwood Hill which can't be a coincidence :)
