Crime statistics

Post by Thomas »

Quite a few threads have covered crime, or the threat of crime, and (after seeing something similar on a different website) I have found this information on the Met's website:
http://www.met.police.uk/crimefigures/d ... eriod=year

This shows various crime stats for the London Borough of Lewisham as a whole, compared with the London average. You can also break down the stats by ward - click on the "click for ward data". However, because wards are not the same as postcodes/areas you cannot show crime rates for SE26/Sydenham as a whole. Sydenham ward does not include all of Sydenham (parts of upper Sydenham are in Forest Hill ward, and some parts are in Bromley and Southwark boroughs).

The figures show how wards compare with the Lewisham and London-wide averages, and how rates of crime have changed since the previous year. However, it doesn't show how crime varies according to the time of day - it won't tell you if it really is more dangerous to go out after dark for example. Nor does it tell you whether particular parts of a ward are particularly dangerous or if you are more or less likely to be a victim of crime if you are in a particular age group. And it only shows crime reported to the police so if you don't report a crime it won't show up in the statistics. Nor will it show anti-social behaviour such as playing loud music on buses that isn't actually criminal.

Despite these qualifications, the main points I would flag up for Sydenham ward are:
Burglary rates fell in 2007 compared with 2006, and are slightly below both the Lewisham average and the London average
Robbery fell considerably in 2007 compared with 2006, is below the Lewisham average, although it is still above the London average
Violence against the person fell in 2007 compared with 2006, is below the Lewisham average but above the London average

Thanks Thomas that was most interesting.

I would be careful of not reading too much into some variations. Overall Sydenham (and Forest Hill) are around average for Lewisham. Contrast this with Deptford where the results are markedly non-average (unsurprisingly).

I would have thought the demographics should have favoured Sydenham. I wonder whether they may be working against us in that these are 'reported crimes'. Could the good burgers be more assiduous at getting our crimes on the police register?

Oh to have time to go through the other survey (which asks if you have suffered a crime in the last 12 months). These give higher numbers and show the propensity of people to report crime.

So where is the least reported crime ward in Lewisham?

It's not easy to briefly summarise crime levels when there are many different types of offences, and there are very real difficulties in obtaining statistics that can be relied upon, but I hope viewers find this of interest.

Across the range of offences shown, Catford South and Crofton Park seem to have some of the lowest crime rates (not sure why) whilst New Cross and Lewisham Central have about the highest. Overall, there appear to be some considerable differences in crime-rates across Lewisham.

I did find the British Crime Survey via Google, but quite frankly I don't have time to read all 193 pages of it, let alone digest it and summarise the most pertinent points! Perhaps I'll do some more research on this later on.
