Went in on Friday night, from about 8 'til 10. Great place, and great staff. No problem with the music, there was a good variety, from Amy Outhouse to some heavier stuff. They would gladly change the tunes to whatever anybody wanted, as it was all being piped through a laptop.
There were only about 10 people in all night, but I think it will pick up as word gets around.
The staff could not have been friendlier, and there were even free bar snacks, just as we were getting peckish.
I think I have found my new local.

yeah, everytime i've been past there's been tumbleweeds blowing about in there, but i guess it's because they have re-opened under new owners and the old customers have gone somewhere else?nork1 wrote:Strange. I walked past there at 8:45 last night and I could only see 3 people in there. What time does it liven up?

Well, we took the long walk up to the Woodman on Friday to see what had happened to it and were (in the main) pretty pleased. The only comparable place in SE26 is the Dolphin. I've nothing against the Railway, the "Two Half's", the Golden Lion etc, but they don't seem comfortable, relaxing places to have a drink with one's wife in.
The Woodman on Friday night was busy without being packed and had a good atmosphere (something that is often missing in the more cavernous Dolphin. I doubt that the Woodman is as child-friendly as the Dolphin though.)
We did have a problem or two with our food, or at least ordering & receiving it. The order was for Chicken & Black pudding (me), Calves' Liver (other half). Two pints later it hadn't arrived but a slightly flustered staff member did, complete with the money we had paid saying that they were... "out of liver, and sorry for the delay. Order something else and eat for free." So we did. And it was excellent. (Although the chef has a propensity of vertical presentation: my gargantuan plate was barely filled by the two slices of black puding, onions & chicken breast as they were stacked up like a jenga game. Same goes for the sausages and mash ordered as a replacement for the liver). We recycled most of our money-back as a tip because we felt guilty about eating for nothing.
The food was well cooked and fresh, the prices average for this type of thing: £8 is per main, £4 ish for starters.
For the curious, the starters included fishcakes & soup along with a couple of other things (forgotten thanks to Carling Extra at £2 per pint), and the main meals were the three mentioned above, plus an Aubergine based dish and baked trout.
Each to their own etc but I'd say this pub will prove pretty popular, and helps the ongoing balancing out of amenities in the area for those of us for whom Sema & The Railway do not constitute a good time.
