Shackleton biography talk, 18th Nov, Sydenham Library

Post by Tim Lund »

Just saw this in the Sydenham Library Facebook page
Our next special event is a talk by Michael Smith, author of many books on polar exploration. He will introduce his new biography of Ernest Shackleton, on Tuesday 18th November, from 7 -9 in the Community Library, 210 Sydenham Road SE26 5SE (next to Home Park). Refreshments available, you can also buy signed copies of the book

From the Amazon blurb:
Ernest Shackleton is one of history’s great explorers, an extraordinary character who pioneered the path to the South Pole over 100 years ago and became a dominant figure in Antarctic discovery. A charismatic personality, his incredible adventures on four expeditions have captivated generations and inspired a dynamic, modern following in business leadership. None more so than the Endurance mission, where Shackleton’s commanding presence saved the lives of his crew when their ship was crushed by ice and they were turned out on to the savage frozen landscape. But Shackleton was a flawed character whose chaotic private life, marked by romantic affairs, unfulfilled ambitions, overwhelming debts and failed business ventures, contrasted with his celebrity status as a leading explorer.

Drawing on extensive research of original diaries and personal correspondence, Michael Smith's definitive biography brings a fresh perspective to our understanding of this complex man and the heroic age of polar exploration.
and from the author's own web site
Michael Smith is an author and journalist who specialises in the history of Polar exploration. He has written books on Polar history for adult audiences and children, lectured extensively and contributed to a wide range of television and radio programmes, newspapers, magazines and websites.

Thank you Tim for highlighting this. ES is one of my personal heroes and I shall try and be there.

It also highlights another issue - I would have missed it. I do follow Friends of Sydenham Library and hadn't realised it had become another Sydenham Zombie Site. Not updated since last year. Not that I'm picking on them - readers will have noticed this is not an uncommon occurence in SE26.

Publicity for any event is often spasmodic and through arbitrary mediums. Not everybody uses Facebook, Twitter or even STF. To hit the widest possible audience we need to fire through all possible channels. Tried as I have to suggest to our fellow site owners that we work more closely together to promote Sydenham - sharing things like event calendars and news items - response has been decidedly patchy. Where it has worked [you know who you are] the results have been good. Events have not remained a secret shared by a select few. They have been a roaring success.

So if you are an event promoter - or have a forgotten website that needs a touch of tender care - do get in touch. We are all in this/Sydenham together ... any follow-ups on this in Town Asylum please.
