19 garlic cloves

Post by Tim Lund »

So - if there are exactly 19 cloves in the two bulbs of Wight Provence garlic which you buy, for planting 6" apart, what better arrangrment is possible?

Surely, the 6" apart planting out advice is only an approximation / average Tim.
I can see by your accurate geometric plan that you don't do approximation..

I must admit on first glance I did wonder why you were making 'Cat's Cradles' up the allotments.

Looks like you've cracked it for that space, geometrically speaking.

Alternate rows of 6, 7, 6; giving a strip 36" x 12" might leave more foot space if needed.

My favourite would be:
Alternate rows of 4,5,4,5; giving a block 24" x 18" and leaving one left over to grow indoors to snip and eat the "chives" that grow up from it. Great to garnish omelettes or grilled tomatoes, steak or chops. Happy noshing :D

Sometimes when it comes to the execution I do ...

Quantum garlic

Post by Tim Lund »

An update on this.

Very curiously 18 of the 19 bulbs have sprouted where planted, (although one has only just emerged, and does not show up in this photo)

but another appears to have made a quantum jump to the location indicated with a cross, to the one circled outside the garlic nucleus.

More mundane explanations are
  • that it's a three cornered leek Allium triquetrum, which grows of its own accord in my garden, and is also edible, or
  • that somehow I was just clumsy.

No idea about the rogue bulb/shoot. Mind you, wild garlic is (or can be) a known nuisance for spreading underground and popping up everywhere. Maybe you could dig the rogue one up carefully and see if it is a trailer from another bulb?

Or did you GM them into triffids? (Sorry, couldn't resist that.)

Mosy - three cornered leeks aren't the same as wild garlic - which also grows like a weed round here, including in my garden. We also make recipes with it sometimes.

No GM modification done on it yet :)
