Shirley Windmill, Croydon - Guides needed
Hi everyone, I'll be taking groups around Shirley Windmill this Sunday from 1200 until 1700 Would love for any of you to come along to see the mill. This will be my third year guiding at the mill and I can vouch for it being a very worthwhile pastime for just 4 Sunday afternoons a year. Although I ...

As an ex-police officer, driving instructor since 1994 and a smartphone user I am amazed at some of the comments on this thread!

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
I got 10/10 but admit that the first aid kit in France was a pure guess. Agree about the mess of the signs totally. A safe stopping distance that will cover all cars that are legal and in good condition is 2 seconds on a dry road and 4 seconds on a wet road. Just watch the car in front go past a ...

Re: Two people killed in Lennard Road
I do hope nobody here is misreading my post as blaming the police. I did no such thing and was just replying to Butlers post before it. I myself found Gerrys post untasteful. But having said all that you don't know what I do know having been a police officer and unless there were far more serious ...

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
I don't believe there are any studies that show how many collisions and/or casualties are avoided on roads of the type of Sydenham Hill or Westwood Hill by a 20mph speed limit. The studies cover the whole area of the blanket speed. I totally disagree with the point about there not being the space to ...

Re: Two people killed in Lennard Road
As an ex police officer I was wondering that. There were rumours of a child abduction which would be treated differently, but for the sake of a stolen car it should not have been done in my opinion, and according to my knowledge as an ex-police officer. Perhaps there was some truth in it as the ...

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
Oh and also consider the fact that the local driving test centres are not closing. London will still have test centres and I will have the opportunity of becoming busier if I want to as many people will want to take their test here at 20mph. They will do that and pass their driving test having never ...

Don't imagine for a moment we will be rid of those!leenewham wrote:I'd rather thane a 20 mph speed limit than speed bumps, which produce even more pollution.
All the studies say that signs plus other traffic calming measures are far more effective than signs alone.

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
The whole thing is a farce! According to The Sydenham Society, Sydenham Hill will be reverting to 30mph even though it is not a TFL road. That, if true, is welcome news but now they are making Westwood Hill 20mph. I only hope that drivers don't take the same risks there as they have been taking on ...

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
My correspondence with Cllr Rachel Onikosi: Hi Rachel, Lois here who spoke to you earlier today on the phone. I walked down the road to take some photos. Image No1 is going down Westwood Hill from the top of the hill at Sydenham Hill towards Sydenham Road. This is the only 20 mph sign on this side ...

And where are they in Sydenham?mikej wrote: Lewisham can only impose a 20mph limit on their own roads. That won't apply to Tfl's main roads in the borough.
I don't think there are any in Upper Sydenham.

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
Are there not ANY roads in Southwark that are still 30mph?
I am guessing that Southwark have agreed this and guessing that Lewisham agreed with the 20mph limit.
But the road comes under both.
Maybe it will end up 20mph in one direction and 30mph in the other!

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
So what do you mean by 'going back to 20mph'? If it's a reversal of the current 20mph zone, that's Southwark, not Lewisham. I said going back to 30mph, which is what I think you meant to type. Southwark did their borough wide 20 limit some time ago as we all know. Lewisham are doing it now ...

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
Going down the hill there is one 20 repeater sign which is hidden by the trees until you are almost on it and right before the cameras.
I can see someone slamming on their brakes there and causing an accident.
And if that happens it will be down to the LBL!

Re: Speed Camera Westwood Hill - Which speed???
Is it indeed? Have Southwark recognised the folly of their blanket 20 mph rule just as other are about to implement it? No Rachael, I think it's more a case of Lewisham deciding it is one of the few roads that should be 30 mph Sydenham Hill is Southwark on one side of the road and Lewisham on the ...
