Over-65? You might qualify for Attendance Allowance
Anyone over 65 who finds some tasks at home more difficult to do than they used to might not know that there’s a state benefit they could be eligible for. Unusually, it doesn’t matter what your financial situation is. Attendance Allowance is paid to people to help them maintain their independence at ...

Re: STARBUCKS OPENING January 2023
I'm not a devotee of Starbucks, but I think it's a good edition to the high street. The more variety the better. But when I go for a coffee, it will still be to Cobbs Corner, which does good coffees and excellent food, especially the all-day English breakfast.

Fake invitation for an NHS passport
I've just received an invite purporting to be from the NHS and inviting me to get a Covid passport. On analysing it, I realised it wasn't genuine. The email address is came from was not an NHS address.

What do you think about The Golden Lion?
What does everyone think of the Golden Lion? I spent an enjoyable evening in its lovely garden at the back last night, but, not for the first time, the pub was virtually empty. Yet The Dolphin was busy. The Lion’s a spacious pub with friendly staff, but, for some reason or other, many locals don’t go ...

Re: Police crack down on e-scooters
The reason e-scooters are being confiscated by the police is that it is illegal to use them on the pavements and roads (unless hired from one of several pilot schemes running in London). Cars are not illegal on the road. When I walk down the high street, I see numerous e-scooters whizzing along the ...

Police crack down on e-scooters
It was good to see the police today cracking down on people riding e-scooters. They have became a menace. I counted eight officers positioned near Sainsbury's and the Lawrie Park Road/Westwood Hill junction this afternoon. I saw one young guy get put in the back of a police van, along with his e ...

Loud motorbikes late at night
It's 11.40 pm, and for the last half an hour or so I've heard what sounds like loud motorbikes roaring around. I live off Lawrie Park Road. The sounds seem to come from the Kirkdale/Westwood Hill/high street area. Has anyone else heard the same thing?

Re: Delivery scooters all parked down Spring Hill
While the mopeds parked on Spring Hill are providing a valuable delivery service, as a pedestrian, you really have to pay extra attention when crossing the road between Nando's and Sainsbury's. The mopeds have a habit of zipping in and out of Spring Hill, and weaving between traffic at the roundabout.

Re: Danger of e-scooters
Following on from my original post, I was walking across the railway bridge in the high street this evening when suddenly two teenagers on e-scooters came flying at speed towards me and the mother and toddler I was walking behind. Either of us could have been hit. Then as I neared The Greyhound, a ...

Danger of e-scooters
E-scooters have become a real danger in Sydenham. This afternoon I saw a guy on one shoot out from the path between Sainsbury’s and The Greyhound and, without looking, fly straight across the road, forcing a car coming up from the direction of the station to slam on the breaks. Had the driver being g ...

Warning: DPD couriers - spam email
I just received what appeared to be a genuine email from DPD, asking me to reschedule a delivery. As I was expecting a delivery, I clicked on the link and landed and what looked like the genuine DPD web site. When I saw that there was a charge to reschedule delivery, I became suspicious. So after ...

How will this lockdown affect us?
I'm interested to know, from talking to family, friends and colleagues, what people think about this second lockdown. I don't mean whether it's a good or bad idea. I mean what are people you know saying about the impact on their lives. Will it make them feel safer and make them feel more confident ...

Re: Dangerous e-scooters in Sydenham
And it's not just e-scotters that make walking in Sydenham hazardous. It's also cyclists using the pavement. As I stepped out of Billings this morning, I was nearly hit by two kids on bikes, who were flying along the pavement. This is not the first time I've seen this kind of thing in the high ...

Dangerous e-scooters in Sydenham
Am I the only person who is concerned about being hit by an e-scooter in Sydenham? A couple of weeks ago walking up Kirkdale, one flew past me, brushing my shoulder, and yesterday, walking past Pure Gym with my son, I narrowly escaped being hit by another. As far as I’m aware, it’s illegal to ride th ...

Re: New Italian takeaway on Dartmouth Road
I hope it does well, but the menu looks rather odd: roast potatoes, a "tin" of tuna, polenta, chicken bites, vegetarian lasagne.
