Re: Windmill Victory

Ideas about hotels, B&Bs, multi-storey pubs and roof terraces on Kirkdale all sound good but I think the plans approved by the planning committee are more likely to succeed and appeal to a business owner. I'm sure the residential units will be snapped up. Mary as a member of the Sydenham Society ...

Re: Windmill Victory

Thanks for the update, Prince, I think that’s great news. I would have much preferred Antic’s proposal in 2015 to have been successful but this should be a significant improvement on the status quo. @Sydenham - For what it’s worth the Society's objection to Antic, Sainsburys and the extracts I've cop ...

Re: The Sydenham Society

I think it’s great that Pat has responded to some of the comments about the Sydenham Society. I don’t think anyone doubts the good intentions of the Society’s members and committees and I know from experience that it can be exasperating when you devote your free time to help the community and people ...

Re: Windmill Victory

There has been another application to redevelop the site of the old Windmill Pub and The Sydenham Society has objected again. This is at least the third development The Society has objected to on this site since The Windmill closed over 3.5 years ago. First it was Sainsbury's, then it was the Antic ...

Re: RUMOURS: CINEMA AND NANDOS COMING TO SYDENHAM

I've sent them an email too actually to see if there is a way to offer support. Given the outcome at The Windmill following the Sydenham Society's intervention it would be interesting to know whether they have objected to Nandos too

Re: The Journey Cafe

I went for the first time today. I agree with everyone else that it looks great inside and out, a really good addition to the Kirkdale high street. I had a coffee and brownie and both were brilliant. Each to their own on healthy vs unhealthy food I guess, but I prefer the former. Particularly when ...

Re: Windmill Victory

The Windmill has now been standing empty for three and a half years, looking increasingly awful by the month. Since it closed and Sainsburys were stopped from replacing it by a well meaning campaign we've had some fantastic businesses open on this section of Kirkdale. Does anyone know whether the ...

Re: Man with 2 dogs off lead

Speaking as someone who loves dogs and grew up with several family pets I find it difficult to believe that people who walk their dogs around Sydenham without leads don't know that it's illegal. Regardless it's no excuse as they should make it their business to know how the law applies to their pets ...

Sydenham climbing wall

I'd quite like to get into climbing so checked online to see where the closest climbing wall was to Sydenham. It turns out there is one in the The New Generation Youth and Community Centre on Wells Park Road in Sydenham. I found a few photos on this website (link below) but there doesn't seem to be ...

Re: Gated Kitewood to start building Lawrie Park Place

I'm not really sure I understand what was meant by "GATED because we want to benefit from the community but keep our neighbours out. Appalled at this selfish anti-social attitude." I would have reservations about the idea of a gated off community if it had it's own shops and services that weren't ...

Re: Longton Avenue/ Wells Park Development threat

I walked past the existing building a couple of days ago and have to admit to personally not really understanding the architectural merit that others see in it. I also took a look at the internal photos accompanying the planning application which show that the building is in a fairly poor state of ...

I think that's probably right, Monkeyarms. I was absolutely delighted when they did the refurb and think the pub is great. It's my favourite place to spend a summer afternoon, particularly with the table tennis table. The garden has a really nice atmosphere with kids running around as well which is ...

Re: Windmill Victory

I have just re-read the judgment shared by Tim above on the Asset of Community Value listing. The reason that the Windmill is empty and becoming an increasing eye sore is because of the Asset of Community Value listing. I can only conclude that the people who obtained and continue to support this ...

Re: Starting-up a Barbers business in Sydenham

I agree with Mayowthorpe. There have been several successful businesses opening on Kirkdale, near the Dartmouth Road junction recently so that would be a good bet as rents are much lower than Sydenham High Street which would reduce your risk. It's a busy road for traffic so you'll get spotted and ...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

I agree with Stuart's sentiment, with the exception that I don't welcome businesses on the high street whose contribution to the community is outweighed by the costs they impose on society. Clearly this is pretty subjective, but a starting point for me is whether the business' cash contributions ...
