Re: Goodbye Sydenham Community Radio

As far as I know, a stand alone hard disc exists which has an archive of most, if not all of the programmes that were ever put out; I don't know if the audio is raw and as broadcast, or edited, as posted on the website, but it's all there, I just don't know who has it now, probably Darren. As for ...

Re: Goodbye Sydenham Community Radio

As somebody who was involved in Sydenham Community Radio at the highest level, from the very first consultation meeting, to the very last gathering of what remained of the Board of Directors, I feel it behoves me to answer some of the questions raised in this thread. To begin with, I'm going to ...

I take back all I said-almost!

What I previously posted was true, but I've subsequently discovered that the CP history was fleshed out and published...........

Re: Car repairs/body shop

Hi Can anyone recommend a really good body shop in the locale to buff out scratches on a car please? Many thanks. GFA Are you sure you really mean "buff out"? Despite what the TV adverts for superduper scratch removal pens/polishes would have us believe, it's normally near on impossible to ...

Re: Interesting new book coming soon

The update is, Crystal Palace ended up featuring as the opening chapters of a history of New Cross speedway, but the publisher felt the book was too long and removed the CP section, then it was decided there wasn't enough content to warrant a stand alone book, which is probably fair, as the track ...

Re: Cyclist mows down Sydenham pedestrian

Here's the problem: I have a scientific and logical mind, you have a scientific and logical mind, but I know my school reports remarked on my exceptionally scientific and logical mind; I don't know about your's :) The point is, I can use my exceptionally scientific and logical mind to justify the ...

Re: Cyclist mows down Sydenham pedestrian

But perception is the thing that needs to be dealt with. You can prove anything you want with statistics, but if those stats don't square with the general perception, they don't mean squat. For example, we all know, because we've been told ad infinitum, that flying is the safest form of transport ...

Re: Cyclist mows down Sydenham pedestrian

As someone who spends most of his working life driving the streets of London and beyond, I've no doubt Stuart will be dismayed to hear that I can't recall the last time I saw a car run a red light, let alone 30% of my fellow motorised road users. On the other hand, just today I was sitting at a red ...

In search of a local family

Whilst out in the car today, I found myself, as I often do, listening to Robert Elms on BBC London; one of his guests was from the MoD's Historic Casualty Casework team, who seek to give recently discovered fallen soldiers, a decent burial and the recognition they deserve. They told the story of a ...

Re: Crystal Palace Speedway.

This is an area of special interest for me, as a life long speedway follower and CP/Sydenham resident, to the extent that I wrote an extensive piece which I intended to post on this site, until a hard drive disaster meant I lost the lot. Crystal Palace was actually very important in the early days ...

There were certainly lots of people and plenty of traffic, but are you saying you didn't notice that the vast majority of shops were closed?

Re: People power

Unfortunately, you now won't have the chance. I drove down Sydenham High Street at 3 o'clock and it was shut. Payless on the bridge was open (although the shutters were down) and Billings and Costcutters were trading, but everywhere else had gone home for the day, including the bookies, banks and ...

Interesting comparison, but I think the one with the tower is wrong. It's definitely the north tower, but the angle of the 'present day' picture would not match up, if the north tower was still standing. I think the original was taken when they had that extra loop in the track. http://gplea ...

Re: P.V. Motorcycles, Perry Vale 1911-1924

We're a general mechanical/body repair business for cars, but we also do a lot of classic stuff and we've recently done a few bike jobs (not quite as old as PV!) including repairing and painting the bodywork on an early 70s Honda trial bike and a Zundapp Bella scooter from the 50s (a fantastically ...

Re: P.V. Motorcycles, Perry Vale 1911-1924

I must admit, as someone who's involved in the restoration business, I do find it very frustrating when I see basic things, like colours, being messed up, particularly when the original isn't entirely unknown. I also find it odd that these institutions don't work much more closely with each other ...

Ha, funny you shuld mention that. It's a long time since I was last there, but I remember seeing a write up on a bike made in Perivale and thinking what a coincidence it was, because I lived near Perry Vale! I guess I never made the connection (I didn't know about Messrs Elliston and Fell then) but ...

Re: P.V. Motorcycles, Perry Vale 1911-1924

willy - that's RAC standard 'tax hp', calculated using the equation D x D x n / 2.5 where 'D' is the bore size (in inches) and 'n' is the number of cylinders, which bears no relation to the actual power output of the motor, but I'm sure you knew that  Nick - I can't help you with any pictures ...

Re: P.V. Motorcycles, Perry Vale 1911-1924

I can't add a great deal of information, other than that published in the Red Book of 1917; according to that publication, there is a suggestion they ceased (or, at least, severely curtailed) production from 1914, which wouldn't be unusual, as many of their suppliers would've been otherwise engaged ...
