1911 Census

Have just looked at the 1911 census and two people living in my house have occupations listed as 'sorter'. Is this someone who worked in the post office? Can anyone enlighten me.

Freeview boxes

Is anyone else having problems with their freeview box? About 10 days ago all of a sudden our box told us it couldn't find any channels. We have one TV with an in-built system and there is no problem with that just the box. Not sure where I should buy a new box or if there is something fundamentally ...

I don't know what everyone is getting hot under the collar about because it doesn't seem that anyone hip or otherwise is interested in opening a pub / club / restaurant or decent shop in Sydenham.

You could walk to Penge East and take the train to Victoria - there are no barriers at Penge East.

Lost and Found

Have you lost or know of anyone who has lost / mislaid a long haired black and white cat with a fluffy tail? For the last six of weeks he has been visiting us and our neighbours (Hillmore and Broseley Grove and Knighton Park Road areas). He is wearing a new black collar with a fluorescent pink and ...

Hi

Try the Outback in Station Approach I have been going there for sometime. I also have short hair with highlights. Paula who owns the Outback is an excellent cutter and I am very pleased with my highlights. It is a small and friendly salon offering a wide selection of free drinks!

I think it is too late to petition Somerfield as the supermarket chain is up for sale. The two main contenders to buy Somerfield seem to be the Co-op and Asda.

Crystal Palace on TV

There is a programme on ITV 1 on Thursday nights called 'Suggs' Survivors'. On this weeks programme it tells the tale of two palaces - one of which is the Crystal Palace. The blurb says ' to discover what became of the Crystal Palace.'

It is on Thursday, 17 January at 19h30.

I completely agree with you, but in her posts Pat says 'Barter Inns could have continued trading'. All I am saying is that I would rather see it closed until its future is decided rather than see it continue trading as it was, with the clientele that it had.

Pat - although I agree with a lot of what you say it seems to me that we are now looking at the Greyhound through rose tinted glasses. As I remember it there were fights (some involving the police), drug dealing and generally a lot of bad behaviour and for these reasons I can't really say that the ...

I had exactly the same experience but going in the opposite direction. Boarded a 176 at Cobbs, destination board said Oxford Circus. Reached Camberwell and told the bus wasn't going any further. Everyone then descended only to watch the bus cross over the traffic lights and then commence its journey ...

At the corner of Silverdale and Sydenham Road at roof height is a sign saying 'fish market'. Can anyone tell me if there was ever a fish market here or was it someone with a fish shop but with high expectations?

Again I ask the question where are these barriers going to be situated. At times, especially during the evening rush there is already a crowd trying to get into and out of the station. I can only see these barriers making it worse.

Sydenham has no hope of becoming more like Lordship Lane unless somehow we manage to persuade people that we don't need any more pound shops or hairdressers! Walking home from the station last night I saw yet another shop selling cheap goods and another hairdressers. These people must look at the ...
