Re: Bell Green, Dillwyn Rd in the 60's
I also thought the horse trough was further around the corner at the junction of Bell Green and Perry Rise. I have found a picture which suggests it has been re-positioned near Miall Walk. Although we knew them as horse troughs they were in fact donated by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and ...

Re: Rolling Stones in Sydenham
I posted some years ago that Bill Wyman lived at 18 Miall Road. His actual name is William George Perks. According to the 1939 Register taken on the outbreak of war his father William G Perks and mother Kathleen Mary Jeffery (known as Molly according to Wikipedia) lived at no.38. His grandparents ...

Re: 19 Miall Road Sydenham
Just been looking at the 1939 Register which provides an insight as to who was living in the road on the outbreak of war. Besides the date of birth and occupation it provides the married name of any female who subsequently married. The only records redacted are anyone who is still living and anyone ...

Re: Dilwyn road
According to the 1911 census records George Henry Parker, master baker, and his wife Rosina Parker lived at 6, Bell Green, so the picture shows the bottom end of Dillwyn Road where the playground would have been.Chris Doran wrote:Nice shop photo currently on eBay. Expensive to buy, but no charge for looking.

Re: Dilwyn road
This brings back memories. I lived in Champion Crescent and used to walk down Dillwyn road to Bell Green to catch a bus to school in the 1960s. I had forgotten about the timber yard and playground. It certainly was small although I don't recall playing in it. Maybe it was because of the sign that ...

Re: 19 Miall Road Sydenham
If you check out Google maps, Miall Road was where the footpath now runs between Dillwyn Close and Holmshaw Close. Dillwyn Road, Miall Road and Holmshaw Road were built to house the workers in Bell Green Gas Works. The houses were knocked down in the 1970s and replaced with a new housing development ...

Re: 2nd Sydenham (St Michael's)Scout Group
I attended Cubs at the scout hut which was at the top end of Carlton Terrace near to the prefab buildings (later became the new St Barts School). This would have been in the early 1960's and I recall that these scouts were 'Air Scouts', some kind of affiliation to the RAF, some others were Sea ...

Re: 2nd Sydenham (St Michael's)Scout Group
Whilst I'm not sure about the scouts raising money for the new church hall I do recall the new church being built as we lived opposite in Champion Crescent. This was in 1956 although I believe the church hall was added at a later date. Looking at a picture of the school itself in the City of London ...

Re: Rolling Stones in Sydenham
It would definitely have been in the old church hall of St Michaels in Bell Green (now St Michaels House). As I haven't lived in Sydenham for years I'm not sure whether this is a completely new building or a re-furb of the old building. The old building had a stage at one end and could have been ...

My daughter just rang to say that I had incurred a fine on her car for ignoring a no-right turn sign in Catford. The last time I was in Catford was when I took her car to Gonella Brothers which is under the bridge for a repair. Until I found this forum I couldn't understand where I had gone wrong ...
