I think the quickest+cheapest route (zones 2-3) is train to Clapham Junction, then switch to overground/train to West Brompton.

There certainly is. It's located where the guys selling the papers used to be. Quite nice coffee as it goes! I only noticed it at the end of last week.

You can actually buy travel cards for Oyster at many of the newsagents in the area.
I find it to be much easier to go there than queue up at the station.
