Re: New coffee shops and closures
The stationary shop also has signs that it is closing down after I’m not sure how many years but imagine quite a few! They are closing at the end of September, citing vastly increased rent and rates which mean the business is no longer a viable proposition. A great shame, since they had an e ...

Re: Positive note about the forum!
It is certainly not as lively as the days when Big Bad Wolf roamed the Town Pub and gave the forum a bad reputation amongst the moderate citizens of Sydenham. The waning of interest is however common to many forums (OK, should be 'fora', but that's a lost cause) since social media have largely taken ...

Roofer wanted
The parapet at the front of our hip gable roof (this may not be the correct term) has a large hole in it which is leaking badly. We need someone who can repair it, and also check up on the general condition of the roof. Since it was undoubtedly a cowboy 'repair' to remove buddleia there a year or ...

Re: Licence application for gambling……
Can you imagine having an unmanned premises open 24hrs dedicated to this, a nightmare for residents living close by. Is it actually unmanned? The application states that there will be 12 employees, and complimentary tea/coffee will be provided. I would object very strongly to unmanned opening ...

Sparsh Indian Restaurant, Forest Hill
Since Gurkhas was fully booked last night we took some visiting family to Sparsh, a new-to-us Indian restaurant in Forest Hill, opposite Sainsburys. A small, clean establishment with a menu which was not extensive, but covered all the bases. The food was beautifully presented and the flavours were ...

For Sale: Alpern upholstered single 3' bed frame
New and unused. Bought and assembled by one of my daughters for my wife when she returned from hospital five weeks ago. It proved far too low for her, and is thus surplus to requirements. Currently the headboard is separated, as are the upper an lower bed-frame sections. £100 for quick sale. Can be ...

I am leaving my green bin out in the hope it is collected today. It is unfortunate that when on the street passers-by put totally unsuitable general rubbish in it.

Re: St Christopher's Second hand furniture shop
The planning applications have indeed been through several iterations, of decreasing ambition, with all except the last being vigorously opposed. Early versions looked like a stack of shipping containers! Since my wife and I live in the listed building next door we took a very active interest in the ...

Re: Bin collection
I am used to the bins being collected at least a day late after public holidays, so I didn't bother putting mine out on its normally designated day. When I checked online that day to see if the delay was going to be 1 or 2 days I was horrified to see that normal collection times applied and my green ...

Re: Covid Vaccine - Third Booster Jab
I got my call-up from the Sydenham Green practice for a booster jab exactly 6 months after my second jab. Booked a time for next Thursday. No mention of a flu jab yet. Interestingly my wife, who is a few years older than I am, has always been called for vaccination about a week after me. I can only ...

I shall continue to wear a mask on public transport and whilst shopping; at least until the general infection rate is much lower. It is a minor inconvenience.

Re: how to get out of this mess
Surely the metrics which determine when restrictions can be eased are the rates of infection, hospitalisation, and death. Until these fall to an acceptable level we have to persist with lockdown. Trying to set a date in the future for this must currently be like trying to predict the weather several ...

Re: how to get out of this mess
We should be thinking bigger. Why not cull everyone over 60 ..... If you consider 'Society' as a unit there is a certain logic to this. Feed and educate the young well. Provide good housing and healthcare for them and the workers. Eliminate any members who are no longer productive but still require ...

Re: Dangerous e-scooters in Sydenham
I agree with you that they are an increasing danger. The top speed is supposed to be 15mph but I suspect some have been 'breathed on'. In the event of a collision there is a good chance that the rider would be hurt more, since they wear no protective clothing, but that is cold comfort.

Re: The NHS COVID-19 app
I downloaded the app yesterday morning. It seems simple. Since I don't visit pubs or restaurants all I have to do is notify it if I get Covid 19, or wait for it to tell me that I am at risk.

Re: Has the public "relaxed too much"
It will be interesting to see if the rate of hospital admissions, and ultimately the death rate, shows a similar rise after a week or two. These are the major problem with Covid19, not young people getting mildly ill. Opening up society, and increasing testing, was always going to result in more ...
