Re: Primary schools/pre-schools in Sydenham

Hi there - I don't live in Sydenham anymore, but I have been through the application process there. We were a bit further down the high street and my child didn't get into any of our chosen schools - but luckily we moved away before he had to start school. St Barts is very popular as is Eliot Bank ...

haseltine school

Interestingly enough, we too were offered a place at Haseltine today - not one of our choices at all. Luckily we have just moved out of the area - so will not be taking up the 'kind' offer. But just wondering how many people have actually got into a school of their choice - not just 1st, but 2nd 3rd ...

The Girls House

Out of the mouths of babes... my nearly-four-year-old is very interested in the Girls House, which we walk past most mornings. When I said he couldn't go in because it was just for girls his reply was "well where's the boys' one?"

oyster PAYG

We've had people staying from Australia, and one of them ended up paying about £17 for a trip to Charing Cross. He topped up his card at Sydenham, went through the barrier - this was mid morning so not busy - and when he got to the other end couldn't get through because there wasn't enough money on ...

moving to sydenham

Hi there - lots to do with babies - loads of playgroups, a great choice of parks - we can easily walk to at least three. Plus music groups, storytime at library, and the Horniman Museum, gardens and sandpit in park just a bus ride a away. If you have an iPhone download the free walk score app, which ...

fun for kids

While you're here, go to the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill where they can enjoy the music room and aquarium as well as lots of workshops (usually have to be 3-plus). If the weather's nice, don't miss the huge sandpit across the road - my 3-year-old can spend hours there. Take them to see the ...

Sydenham is full of foxes. Not sure where you live but I regularly see them around Trewsbury road, Fairlawn Park - and not just in the dead of night! So you may need to make sure your coop is fox proof :)

Christmas trees

We resorted to an artificial tree after seeing the prices when we moved here. When we lived in Buckinghamshire we paid £15 for a 6-7 footer. Maybe the price drops over the Kent border. Anyone know?

Oystercard PAYG starts in January

Are they really going to be that much cheaper? All the prices I've seen have quoted a single fare compared with an oyster single, but surely a lot of people buy returns or travelcards that work out much cheaper than two singles.

Choosing a primary school

It's that time of year! Does anyone have any good/bad views on Sydenham's primary schools? Yes, I've read the Ofsteds but that's just one inspector's view of one day - I'd love to hear from parents' own experiences. Please feel free to pm me if you don't want to post publicly! Thanks ever so much

I'm a freelance journo (though not in this field, so don't mind sharing info!). Check out gumtree's media and design jobs - you'll find plenty of mags and websites asking for these kinds of reviews (usually unpaid - but once you have a reasonable portfolio you'll have more chance of getting in with ...

Re: new shop

If you could squeeze in some kids' clothes that would be great - at the moment we're limited to Sainsburys (which admittedly has a pretty good choice) or mini gangsta-rapper styleez. Properly fitted kids shoes would be another choice for me.

For further trips your mum might like to get the new priority seat card from Southern. She sounds like she'd qualify - you can then show the card to someone sitting in a priority seat and they should get up for you.

Good primary schools?

Wondered if anyone had any thoughts on primary schools in Sydenham? My little boy is 2, and very bright (yes, I know everyone thinks their child is!) I have not read every Ofsted report yet, but am wondering about the standard of reception classes in the ones I have read. Anyone had any recent ...
