Re: Crystal Palace Park motorsport

I remember motor sport at Crystal Palace as if it were yesterday. Among programmes from TT races and others I have one from Crystal Palace organised by British Automobile Racing Club and supported by Holts and Adlard Cars dated July 2nd 1966. Deep joy.

Re: World War II: An evacuee’s tale

Hello Lee I can't remember too much about Ilfracombe or as my Nan used to call it "ill frar cum bee" but we were billeted in Brookfield Place. I seem to remember it was off the Main (High Street?) a covered access in between two shops with biggish nice houses all down the left hand side. If you ...

Re: World War II: An evacuee’s tale

I still enjoy reading all about Sydenham Annie, but its been a long time. I left in 1958 but look back with fond memories and love reading about it now, all the best, brian.

Re: Sydenham's Children's Hospital

I was in the Children's Hospital in 1953 at the age of 13 with a broken leg. Most of the children were younger than me and I thought I should be in a "grown up's" hospital. But my favourite nurse was Nurse Exley, remembered with affection to this day (it might have been a schoolboy crush).

Re: Newlands Park shops

The sweet shop next to the Cobblers (Burtons) was owned and run by a blind chap in the fifties, a lovely Guy, who not only sold sweets but all manner of other "requisites".

1940s and 50s, On the corner of Tansfeld and Newlands Park was a Greengrocer ( 7lbs. of King Edward potatoes 1/- (one shilling or 5 pence to the youngsters) ). A couple of shops up was a Newsagent (where I did my paper round) and the shop on the corner of Newlands Park and Studland Road was a ...

Re: Community café for Mayow Park !?!

I hope you won't mind me digressing for a moment but I remember Mayow Park in the late forties and fifties, it was a wonderful place to play. If you went into the entrance in Mayow Road opposite Burghill (?) Road there was a lovely building on the left, is that the Pavilion?, in there they had a ...

Re: Wunderbau - Old Cedars - Kirkdale

By way of an aside, my Father rented a garage at the Old Cedars in the late 1940's early 50's for 3/6d a week, I suppose the block of garages would have been stables at one time. His car was his pride and joy and if he put it away wet he would leather it off and then walk home to Wiverton Road in ...

Re: Children's Home - Newlands Park

I lived in Sydenham prior to 1958 and I can remember what I think was a Children's Home just by Penge East Station although I can't remember the name of it. If you turned left out of Venner Road (Penge East Station end) there is some newish three story flats on the left hand side, well that is where ...

My Grandfather married a Mrs Ellen Elizabeth Cheeseman, widow, nee Bull, from Lewisham in 1927. As I understand Mrs Cheeseman had two sons although I don't know their first names. They lived at 23 Crossfield Street, Deptford after they were married. At the time of her marriage to my Grandfather she ...
