Re: The Haven & Rookstone redevelopment
I agree with Juliet. There is another thread on this forum exclaiming over rising house prices in SE26, which we know is significantly influenced by an overall lack of supply. Building high density housing is required in places like Sydenham and other parts of Greater London. The green belt ...

Re: Adamsrill - Reception 2012
Hi Suzie - my children will be the "big kids" in the infant building (Yrs 1 & 2) when your son starts. Welcome to Adamsrill! Hope he settles in well.

Re: swimming lessons for toddlers in the area?
Over the years, I've taken my children to The Bridge, Crystal Palace and Beckenham Spa. The Bridge has good swimming teachers but the other staff and facilities are less than stellar. (The "pool shutting" business has been a problem for over two years now, and is why I stopped going.) Crystal Palace ...

Re: Child friendly pub?
I am a little bemused by the suggestion that parents should NEVER have a glass of wine whilst looking after children. I know a few people who are plastered after a single glass of wine, but they're so sensitive I'm not sure a spritzer would help. A cheeseman, if you're a MN regular you'll know that ...

Re: Child friendly pub?
It's a shame to hear The Dolphin has become so unwelcoming. I was on maternity leave when it first opened and at the time they were fairly clued up about cultivating customers who visit with children during slow periods and without them during peak ones.

Re: A Family Classified section in SF?
It would be helpful simply to have a regularly-updated list of baby and child-related activities that are available locally and when/where/how much they are. There's actually a huge amount available, but it often needs to be ferreted out.

A good friend of mine has a child there now. She's really pleased with the school and said the reception teacher who taught her son was really excellent. Earlier this year, I also spoke to a teacher who works in Brockley and she had very positive things to say about the Early Years programme at ...

Very sad to see they've burnt the adventure climbing frame in Home Park. What a terrible waste.

Re: Billings - still impressed
I realise I may be shooting myself in the foot by posting this, but... There were blue swimmer crab in Billings today. I've heard about them before, but not actually bought them til now. I boiled 'em, chopped 'em, and stir-fried them in my wok for around a minute with a bunch of garlic, ginger ...

I live in the "central Sydenham" area identified, and my eldest started at Adamsrill last September. Like many, I pined for Eliot Bank before I made my applications. It's been fine so far. In fact, it's been so un-worrying that I feel slightly embarrassed about my previous middle class angst. So far ...

Re: Community café for Mayow Park !?!
I've always been intrigued by the idea of a series of pop-up cafes/restaurants in a space like that. In SE Asia a "restaurant" will pay rent to run for a morning in a spot, then close down and the next person will come in to do the afternoon (and run a completely different restaurant), then there ...

Re: Vote For Kirkdale Village Logo
I really don't see a problem with a bunch of traders banding together to drum up some enthusiasm about a section of the high street, even if they've labelled it a "village." FWIW, I actually think that some of what's happened in Sydenham over the past few years (the Arts Festival, the gingerbread ...

Their peanut butter is several cuts above the stuff you get in the supermarket, too. I have an enormous jar that they've sourced from some co-operative or other, and in comparison all the Good Earth & Sunpat types actually taste slightly stale. It's also great if you're a bit of a whole grains/weird ...

Re: GOOD NEWS
What an interesting error regarding the supposed "pedestrianisation" of the high street. Given the passionate misinformation campaign that was launched against the high street improvements, I think I can take Dot's concerns over gentrification with an Atlantic-sized grain of salt.

If you're driving, Wing Yip is great. Otherwise, I tend to trek all the way into China town to New Loon Moon. Their Thai ingredient selection is fantastic.
Re: GOOD NEWS
Actually, most of the "me too" downmarket shops don't survive. In the past year, we've seen AKSU, several hairdressers and barbers, and the anything-with-a-bit-of-Mexican restaurant places come and go with alarming frequency. Clearly, more of the same isn't actually what the market needs, but we ...
