Family history in Upper Sydenham

Post by JVLFord »

I am presently engaged in researching my family history. My relations lived in Malham Road, Rojack Road, Vestris Road, Clyde Terrace, Halifax Street, Edney Street, Coombe Road and Prospect Place. I have over the last few years done a considerable amount of Census and BMD & visited Croydon, Lewisham, Dover and Maidstone Local Studies Libraries with some amazing sucesses.

If anyone has any photographs of the above roads or knowledge of I should be pleased to hear from you. I should also like to hear from anyone with knowledge of three family groups (Leach, Horne and French) all living in these roads at various times between 1871-1972.

Many thanks

Hi mate,

Malham Road

Rojack Road,
Vestris Road

Might find something at Lewisham Local Studies. I think the streets still look the same now as they did in your ancestor's time.

Clyde Terrace
There's some photos of Clyde Vale AKA Raglan Street just round the corner (check link below), but none of Clyde Terrace.

Halifax Street

Edney Street

Coombe Road
There's a photo in the book, Sydenham and Forest Hill, by John Coulter and John Seaman.

Prospect Place
This was demolished too early, so there's no photos. It was discussed here:

The terrace appears to be in a painting:

Going by a later map, Group (9) and (10) on the Tithe Map appear to be Prospect Place (see [this] topic), part of which can be seen in the painting, but some of these buildings were possibly altered before the next map was published...

You should try the Hyde Park Family History Centre in Exhibition Road, South Kensington for researching Parish registers. They've got more stuff than any institution I know. And if you have any Irish ancestors like myself then it's the only place in England to see the Irish BMD indexes.

Many thanks for the pictures Falkor.

I had relatives lived at 31 Halifax Street for c29 years and 1 Trews Cottages, Prospect Place for a short period. I also had another relative living at 'Leaside', 7 West Hill Villas, Taylors Lane.

I have done most of the BMD and Census research and have gleaned much information from all of them.

Thanks again.
