The petition now has over 500 signatures in just 4 days!
http://nototraincuts.notlong.com

There is a motion going to full council on Thursday evening (24th September - 7:30pm), see details at http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/councilandde ... 202009.htm
This motion, proposed by Brockely councillor Dean Walton, opposes cuts to rail services on our line and I hope it will get cross party support.

I am told that a good turn out in the public gallery will get it discussed early on the agenda and will make sure that the council take this issue more seriously. Please attend this meeting if you can.

Called up to speak but then "stood down", I'm afraid!

Talk about climate change and Baroness Scotland went on for far too long to get on to rail travel. Pity - because the guest on the show was Kulveer Ranger, Director of Transport Policy for the Mayor. And Boris stood on a policy of better transport links for the outer suburbs.

My flatmate points out that the current Charing Cross trains are the last late-night service to Sydenham - 11:45 and 12:08.

If we loose the Charing Cross trains, do we also lose these late night services to Sydenham too?

The 176 bus is not a very attractive alternative.

Anyone know the answer to this?

No - we won't lose those services. But from December (the new timetable) they will start from LB instead of CX.

I've been given an early copy of the December timetable by Southern so I can tell you exactly when the last trains will leave LB after December:

Currrently the last trains to Sydenham leave LB at 23.15, 23.24, 23.35 and 00.26

From December the last trains to Sydenham will leave LB at 23.22, 23.36, 00.06 and 00.36

So the services will still be there but they all now go from LB. And it looks as if they might all be leaving a little later, so the potential is there for longer drinking time.

However, the problem will now be getting from CX to LB when there aren't many trains leaving CX after midnight - which is why we need to keep our direct services!!

The petition is up to 665 signatures now, with lots of angry comments expressed.

(ps - Admin: Your notes from the meeting seem to have confused New Cross Gate and New Cross:

Para 7: Four trains will also be starting from New Cross Gate so...

Para 16: One positive suggestion from the audience was for Southern to stop some semi-fast trains from London Bridge at New Cross enabling people to switch to London Overground.)

I’m indebted to Michael Abrahams of the FH Society for the following information:

At last night's council meeting the first 700 signatures on the petition were handed to the mayor on our behalf by Councillor Feakes.

Councillor Paschoud had asked a written question about train services and the deputy mayor confirmed that the mayor had written to Southern, Network Rail, and London TravelWatch about the cuts and the axing oftrains to Charing Cross, and that they, along with Jim Dowd and Joan Ruddock are lobbying on this issue.

Councillor Walton proposed the motion about cuts to services, which had an amendment accepted from Councillor Hall complaining about cuts to the Bellingham to Victoria service as well. The motion was passed unanimously with all party support.

“This council calls on the Mayor to write to Southern rail, Transport for
London and the Secretary of State for Transport to:

• Express the council's grave concerns about Southern's plans to
reduce off-peak and evening peaktime services to and from London
Bridge on the Brockley/Sydenham line from six to four per hour, a
reduction of one third, and to oppose these service cuts;
• Ask for an explanation for Southern's refusal to attend a recent
meeting with council officials and residents to explain the planned
service cuts and invite them to a further meeting, to include the Mayor
himself and ward councillors from affected areas;
• Seek a full explanation of the planned service cuts and
clarification on the maximum capacity of the rail line for both East
London Line and London Bridge services; and
• While wholeheartedly welcoming the new East London Line
service, oppose any reduction in services to London Bridge that are
carried out purely for financial reasons rather than capacity reasons
and lobby instead for the maximum possible services to London
Bridge.”

The above petition has almost 750 signatures barely a week after it was launched, which shows the state of local feeling. If you have signed the above petition already please ask other members of your family and your friends who use peak, off-peak, evening, and weekend services including those from Charing Cross to help us fight these cuts. It is only with your support that we have any chance of getting the railway authorities to change their plans.

Any idea when the earlier services to Victoria will start? As a previous resident over at Gipsy Hill which is also on the London Bridge/ Victoria loop, when I moved over to Syd I was gutted as the LB/V services didn't start until after 9!

Southern has said that in May 2010, the "loop line" to Victoria will commence between 6.30am - 7am, which is great news.

And from May, if you miss one of these twice-hourly direct services to Victoria or want to travel earlier, passengers from Sydenham will also be able to use one of the four tph to Crystal Palace on the ELL (starting at 5.30am) and change there for trains to Clapham Jct and Victoria.

That's great news. Now if we could just persuade Southern to run the last train from Victoria a bit later than 11pm, that would allow for additional drinking time in town!
