OK, this is the scenario. I have a company web-based email facility and I'm trying to run it through Outlook (instead of through the web). I have tried and tried to configure the *****thing, and friends have talked me through it over the phone,...with no luck.
So ultimately there is something really minor i have missed out on, but need someone's help because I am now battle-fatigued with it. If anyone can spare a few minutes to come over Dartmouth Road Way for a few minutes to sort it out, I will gladly buy a couple of beers.

'outlook' help for beers
First step - to check this, try telnetting to your email server and see if you get anything back.lambchops wrote:i'm sure your incoming and outgoing server names are screwed.
I assume you're using Windows, so click Start > Run and type "telnet". Press OK.
In the window that says "Microsoft Telnet>", type "o" followed by the IP address/name of your email server and the port, separated by spaces, then press enter. For example, I use Gmail, so I'd type "o smtp.gmail.com 587" and press enter.
You should get something along the lines of "220..." back. If you only see a progress bar made up of full-stops, you can't connect to the server, either because you've got the details wrong, the connection is being blocked somewhere, or the server is down.

I was trying not to sound patronising honest, okay when you run outlook (from memory as I don't use it any more) & do a send & receive for your mail account you're trying to set-up. Does it pop up a dialogue box with a progress bar? If so does that have a 'details' button somewhere, open that & you should see some messages from Outlook when it fails to do it. There might be a useful pointer as to what is breaking.
Few assumptions I'm making, the work web mail works via a web browser okay right? Have they said it will work through Outlook & if so did they send you the server details (personally I've only set-up pop3 before so I might not be able to help).

With respect, I doubt if any technophobe could follow those.
In my experience the only way for something like this to be sorted is for someone who knows what they are doing to be on site and actually do it, unless the user has some reasonable basic techincal know-how, whereas ALIB says he is a technophobe.
