Actually, as I understand it, the Costcutter refit has nothing to do with the impending Tesco. I've been using this shop almost everyday for the past couple of years, so I'm on pretty good terms with the staff there; I asked them about the works and whether it was pronpted by the arrival of a compet...

Maybe the church will buy it for their Sydenham Radio . But I'd prefer someone to take visitors to eat and drink. We need an upmarket wine bar and english/italian resturant. Just to clarify, no church either organises, finances or has any management involvement in Sydenham Community Radio, so it's ...

Good for you Savvy, do anything you can to encourage them, although be preparred, when frogs find a place to breed, they will come back year after year. Don't worry about them drowning (unless you're planning to hold them underwater) they can float, and they are very inventive about finding dry land...

As someone with a lifelong interest in speedway, they certainly interest me Terry. I'd be interested to know the published date of the first picture, because it shows a car park named 'speedway car park' and an outline of the speedway track, along with an area called 'speedway bank'; regular speedwa...

If you want a proper MOT done, ie if your car passes you know it's been done to the letter of the law and things haven't just been glossed over so as not to upset anyone, the best MOTs in the area are done by Queens, just behind Homebase in Penge. If you really want to know if your car is up to snuf...

A logosymbol/brand marque does a few things. 1. It says 'I am here'. It differentiates, it's distinctive. It marks you out from the crowd. 2. It makes you feel a certain way when you see it. I.e. it's emotive. Lastly it can communicate what you do, although this isn't essential. That's pretty much ...

Sorry, but it may appear that I'm going off on one again! In my original posting, I made a reference to acknowledging that a green dragon might be the earliest symbol for Sydenham, but that was before I read the first page properly; now I have read the first page, I see that the reference to The Gre...

Sorry if I appear to be peeing on the bonfire, but why the green dragon? It might well have the claim to being the oldest symbol associated with Sydenham, but surely the gateway to Sydenham (as we know it today) is better represented by a greyhound? I've lived here, on and off, for 35 years or so, a...

Re: hope it's not an urban myth
I heard from a friend of a friend (doesn't bode well does it?) that the old HSBC Bank might be turning into a Pizza Express. How cool would that be? However it is a rumour but I wondered if anyone else had heard a similar claim. If you want to be 'cool' and have a night out in a Pizza Express, why ...

user100, you've pretty much echoed what I said when I filled in the 'other comments' section of the poll; we've got greasy spoons, takeaways and various other food outlets aplenty. I can't see another cafe offering a USP that will be interesting enough to make a decent profit. As I said on the poll,...

Thanks for that, rebelmc. It lets me identify Bob's grandfather as John Monkhouse, who lived at 6 Mayow Road (three houses from the Perry Vale junction) from about 1911 until his death in about 1937. John's oldest son was Wilfred Adrian Monkhouse, Bob's father. Interestingly, before moving to Mayow...

...and I think whoever made a reference to Mayow Road was confusing Bob Monkhouse with his close friend at Dulwich College, Dennis Gifford. Gifford, a cartoonist, journalist and film historian, was born in Bampton Road. He also has an entry in the DNB. The Mayow Road reference was Bob's Grandfather...

Re: A note about Copyright
If you think it's okay to look at something but not to be able to photocopy it without paying a hefty sum then you should, by rights, stab yourself in the eyes and carry on living the rest of your life blind. Cameras work just like the Eye; they contain lenses that focus an image onto film, or in t...
